Newbie help: How much of a beating can the MCS Trans take?

Long time reader, first time poster...and the new guys has a question.

I will preface this with the fact that i have been searching, have not found the results i am looking for. As i long time miata.net guy, i get the search button!

First, some history: my current ride is a 95 miata with a DIY turbo kit. Based on similar set ups, I estimate around 170-180 WHP at around 8 PSI. Nothing crazy, but a fun ride. Not a drag car by any means, I *get* the twisties.

We have ordered a 05 MCSa for my wife and I am also now infected. THe miata will be going up for sale, as well as spare parts (both mine & the cars...) in the name of my own MCS.

So, the question: The miata does not have a very strong transmission. After my turbo install I would bang every 1-2 shift, often the 2-3 & 3-4 as well. Of course, that caught up with me, and one fine day there was not more 2nd, or for that matter any gears...I admit that I was a bit rough with the shifts. Since then, I shift like a road racer, not a drag racer.

So, how do you drive your MCS? How much hurt can that Getrag take? I'm not talking with the twin-charger or anything, I'm talking about a mostly stock MCS that may or may not have a 15% pulley, intake, exhaust....

Can you beat this trans?

Thank you all!

I am pretty hard on my box, changing at red line about 3 times a day, and not nice change too, change with the gas still half way, car is nearly 2 years old, and 19k miles, gear box still alive. I engine break all the time, poor engine, but still fine, just make sure you apologise to the car when you do these things, and you should be just fine.

one of the reasons why I got the MCS was to get away from sheering gears like how so many do on the WRX's.

Ditto. I've got 11k hard miles on mine. I figure I shift hard enough into 2nd to spin through it with my S03's at least 3-4 times per week The car seems to respond well to it! =)

I have been pretty hard on it since I bought it, however, no problems in 10000 miles, Getrak can take some beating. Of course there is a difference between "being hard on transmission" and "being stupid with it".

THank you all for the input.

ariercetinberk, trust me, I get the difference. I just wanted to make sure that I will be able to give it a little beating & not worry about it. I'm past my *being stupid* with it stage...changing transmissions gets old!

thanks!

I'll chime in, too. I have the mods you see below. The light flywheel and stage 3 clutch means I often have to rev higher than normal and dump the clutch. Lots of wheel chirping. Not a speck o' trouble so far.

Heh....swapping out busted trannies has sadly moved off of my *hot things to do* list. Can't understand why....

Anyway, after *rolling my own* miata, I have to say that I am very inclined to look at the JCW option. I get the whole price point, the math is not hard. However, I am leaning in the direction of just paying directly for the car that I want, as opposed to trying to make a car something that it wasn't.

I know full well that I can handle the install of any of the aftermarket items, but the question is, "Do I want to?" I jut don't know. We will see when it comes time to order.... I have plenty more threads to read about it until then....and i haven't even hit mini2 yet!!!

thanks!

With all those mods, the tires should be melting, not chirping.

Oh, I can make some tire smoke when needed. It's just that I tend to chirp alot even when I'm trying not to.
