Is it possible to retrieve OBD codes myself?

I get an intermittant "service engine soon" light, but no other indications and no ill behavior from the engine. I have just changed my oil and filter- how do I reset the oil change clock? As for the light, sometimes I get the ASC light on during normal driving. I know that BMW wants the cars serviced by them, but I prefer do do all my own work, unless it's a warranty job. -Jeffy.

I use the Peake Research OBD-II scanner/reset tool:

http://www.peakeresearch.com/emx.htm

Works great, easy to use, allows me to avoid the dealership's service department for anything but warranty work.

Intermittent SES - for Peace of Mind (which is very valuable to yours truly), take it to the dealership and have them tell you what's the deal. Mine was a "phony" loose-gas-cap code, as if I opened the cap with the engine running which tatt knows is a no-no...

You could ask them about resetting the service interval while you're there, or heck, why not get the oil change that you've already bought?

ASC light (?): I think you might be hitting the switch to turn off ASC when you mean to press a different switch... In 7 months, my MINI driving idiosyncrasies have definitely manifested. The switches I've hit without meaning to include:

ASC - I wish that switch were further away from the window controls lol!
Cruise Control Activate (I have MFSW)
Various accidental wiper functions...

To my own credit, I have perfected this "move" of reaching thru the steering wheel with my right hand, to activate the turn signal .

Make the trip to the dealer's if you can, think of it as "relationship management",
Tatt

I have minimania code reader which appears to be the same as the Peak model. You can reset the oil indicator, read codes, reset the SES light, etc. Good little tool. I got tired of the run to the dealer every time I got the gas cap code.

I got a CarChip from Autozone for $120 - GREAT tool - not only displays and clears codes, but logs a lot of data too! Not for fine tuning but gives you a clear picture of what's going on with your system.
