Drivetrain 05 MC Tranny Problem
05 MC Tranny Problem
Hey Guys
I just had a quick question to see if anyone has experienced this before.
I just noticed my Tranny griding a bit when shifting into second, it feels like the clutch isnt all the way in and it grinds just a tad and pops in. I'm thinking its messed up linkage.
Like i did shift it into second, but it isnt there yet in the gearbox because the linkage is off a tad. I'm not too sure yet. i told classic to take a look when i go in for an oil change this week. any ideas?
no SS yet (thank god, id have to yank it back out if it was in there!
)

This is a pretty common problem with the Pre 05 Cars. I'm suprised to hear it's happening with your Getrag transmission. My 03 grinds into 2nd all the time unless I time it perfectly. The dealer has yet to do anything about and unless it fails completley will not replace it. At least that has been my experience.....

well, i'm glad to hear im not the only one.
i just rolled past 8900 miles day before yesterday and i started hearing it
i thought i was powershifting and missing the gear timing. it only does it past about 5 grand. it sounds bad and i dont really wanna mess aorund with it if its gonna break here soon. time to go bug them at classic.....

i think the problem is 2nd gear has to "pop" into gear twice.
it clicks once and then again and its in gear. i think i'm letting the clutch out when i pops the first time. then its just grabbing and popping the car into gear. I'm gonna see if theres anything obstructing the line that would prevent a smooth shift when i go to classic friday...

Yes, they're a wear item, but they should at LEAST make it through the warranty period. The timing is working against you though. My first assumption when I hear about a failure at 9K miles is abuse... frequent drag racing, quick shifts, jamming it into gear, etc. I would be that the dealer is going to ASSUME the same thing as well - whether that actually be the case or not.
If you're going to pursue warranty coverage, then you definitely need to pursue it strongly - especially if you feel that you haven't contributed to the early failure. There could be a related failure that is causing the accelerated wear. Better to make them track it down.
[edit] not sure how this is a "performance mod" question though...

I had somthing similar. Turned out I was sitting just a bit too far away and not depressing the clutch all the way. Moved my seat a couple of notches forward and that took care of the problem. Still happens now and then if I don't adjust the seat right after the wife drives it.
My old Audi does that. Caused by the worn synchro I think (not the case for you). To have that happen on brand new car bites. Dealer should fix it, and if they dont, then you as a customer just got screwed.

Well, i tried wating a bit longer to shift after i push in the clutch and it doesnt do it anymore.
I dont know if it was just me, or if there could be a problem, but it hasnt dont it again yet. I was trying to see how i could replicate it, in case the dealer wanted to hear it. If I start off, get it up to about 5k or 5500 rpm, and pull it into second rather fast (not beating on it, just kinda shifting fast) it will do it. I think i'm just not timing shifts right in second anymore. Like I said, there are the 2 bumps i feel when i slide it into second. if you let it out after the first, it isnt fully engauged, and thats what I think i'm doing. I'll wait and see, I have till friday to tell these guys at Classic what to look at. If anything its probably just me worrying......

well, just got back from my 4 hour drive home. i live about 5 miles from work.
my worst fears came true on the trip home today.
well, something must have been floating around down there because as soon as i shifted out of 1st gear on a road on the way home, i heard a nasty metalic pop and parts and tranny fluid trailed my car about 1/8 mile down the road. there wre parts fromt he differential (spider gears) and pieces of the case oon the road. it looks like something broke off and was draggind up against the case. classic said they havent ever seen anything like this before. I think this is stemming back to when my driver side axle broke. i believe something happened then that classic overlooked because the refused to remove the tranny to check for any other possible damage. I think it was juet getting worse and worse until it peaked today.
no mini and i have a CVT loaner car (at least its a convertable)
i'm wating to hear back from one of the techs to hear his opinion on what went on before this happened.
BTW, second gear got so bad, i almost had to double clutch it to get it to go in, almost like it wasnt synchronized anymore.....
7-10 days just to get the tranny, another 3 to install, by classic's repair dept.

we shall see......this time, for once, it wasnt my fault!
i think those guys half-assed the axle job and didnt check anything else out...at least i have some leverage now, i can just bring that up.

the space in the box is where the damage is located.
I looked over all of the pictures, it looks like if worst comes to worst, i might not have to replace the whole tranny, just a diff and half the case......
well, they said they already ordered the parts, so i assume that means it will be covered under wanranty......unless they have my credit car number on file.......
I'm sure it will be helpful to someone sometime down the road, be it a driver or a company, looking for the weak linkof the Getrag....I seem to have found it the hard way......but i guess it will be covered, or else i'm in the hole at LEAST $3,000.
also, my suggestion to anyone with an 05 thats making a bit of noise going into any gear, GET IT CHECKED OUT before this happens to you! park it, drop it off at the dealer, but dont keep driving it!!! it only took one week of daily driving from starting of the noise till the tranny failed.
it looks as if the differential housing that hold the 4 spider gears split in half and spilled its guts....

lol, one more thing,
it appears the bearing on the passenger side of the car where the axle enters the tranny was deprived of lubrication and fell apart! Just froma quick inspection at the dealer, it appears the bearing's outer shell split open, possibly dropping a needle bearing inot the case.....

And to think that on the "never had a problem thread", someone reponded to my Midlands comment that the Gertag was so much better.
Granted, I'm on my second Midlands, but an axle seal failed, not the tranny.
And I could still drive the car after the newer seals were put in. I knew the tranny would be toast in no time, so much metal fillings after the flush, but it felt the same after a flush and new seals installed.
Couple of weeks, 1200 miles later I had a new tranny.
Hope you just got a bad one, cause I want/need an 07, and it looks like they will have Gertags.

I seem to be having lots of Tranny issues with this car that stem from the axle problem a few months back. i swear, Classic overlooked something. they had to. you know how hard it is to split a differential in half??? you could beat it to death all day long and not break. the car hasnt ever been on the track, and, i do drive spirited, but not to the point where i could see a diff breaking and throwing parts! its not like every stoplight i rev it up and dump the clutch for god sake!!
it irritates me just thinking about this..... i'm cursed with this car, must be a sign to sell it and get an MCC (i'm enjoying this rental WAAAAAYY too much)

I do drive in a spirted fashion, from time to time, well most of the time
But I NEVER drop the clutch. I get rolling, then I go.
I shift fast, always, but I do it with a quick movement, not a hard one.
I also, maybe cause I'm old school, down shift to brake. I always rev. match, I like keeping the revs up in the range I figure I need to move along.
Heel toe when needed on the back roads, never hold the clutch disengaged, unless I plan on stopping.
Both Midlands I've had have been great, while motoring.
rednwhitecooper, hang in there.

Well, ive got good news and bad news.
Well, I thought I was going to get my car back tomarrow, but it looks like we wont be reunited until monday or tuesday! Almost 2 weeks apart, I dont know if I can handle it!!! Apparently my clutch needs replacement too, but they hadnt ordered it!
Thats the bad news!
The good news is, it will be free!!!!! Any prior damage to the clutch will be gone and I will have that new car feel back! 300 miles from now (or 2 days, in my happy little world!
) i'll have a brand new car!!! This misfortune has quickly turned into a good thing!

Wel, i got the car back from classic this morning, i forgot how fun to drive it was
ok i get it, drive to work, try to get out...wait a sec, the handle isnt working! those idiots broke my door handle on the inside!!! now i have to take it back next week for them to fix this again!
according to classic, the reason the tranny failed had to do with the clutch, not the transmission itself. "Clutch failure sent fragments of clutch into differential causing premature trasmission failure" "replace clutch, flywheel and transmission"
and, as it was stressed by my MA, the freebie clutch is a one time only thing, no more free ones!!! time to baby the car now!
