Another New Top Mount IC

Just got my Moss Motors magazine yesterday, on the back they have this new from Forge Motorsports in the UK:

http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/con...oduct=FMMININT

Price is definitely reasonable at $699 US, and free shipping from Moss, not bad if it really does deliver. This, along with something like the M7 scoop gulping more air might be a nice pre-Summer mod combo...

Sort of reminds me of the GRS in appearance. Anyone got this yet?

I was wondering also...

One of the reasons I have not yet pulled the trigger of such a purchase is that I'm not keen on the idea of having to remove the IC every 6 or so weeks when I check and re-torque the spark plugs. This one at least appears not as deep, front to back as the others, but I can't tell if it covers the wires...

Nice looking piece...great price. Forge makes a nice FMIC for VW/Audi 1.8t applications. My friend has one on his GTi and he loves it. Said the power was felt instantly...though if you saw what those guys switched from, you'd see why. For the same placement, same air, but a larger surface area, I couldn't guess how little/how much the gains would be. Like to see some more info on it. A diverter would help...

Since the guys in Europe are probably more likely to know more about this, I started a thread on MINI2 recently:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92073

Still no replies as of yet...

It's not that big a deal...

I bought an early Alta TMIC used from someone here. I was worried about that too, as I blew a plug and paid $368 to get it fixed... But now, I can pop off and replace the IC in about 10-15 min... Yes, it's a bit of a pain, but it's not anything to wory about. So, if it's on your list, don't worry about the extra work.....

And I too have been thinking about the hood scoop.... It seems a perfect match with the new IC...

I hear ya Matt, and I've been thinking about it alright.

First, for those not aware of the spark plug loosening concern, here is a thread that might be of interest:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ght=spark+plug

Ever since I started using anti-seize, my monthly checks have been positive, with virtually no tightening needed. I've been thinking about checking every 3 months now, and with that, a larger IC doesn't seem like such a pain...

I know it's only 20 or so minutes, but it's just another opportunity to put something back in such a way that I get a pressure drop. I've read where others didn't get a good seal, and had to go back and do a re-fit...

Heck, I guess I'm still just a little perturbed that I need check plugs as often as we do/should .

I think I might be able to do it in my sleep now! With mine, the hardest part is getting the seal on and the clamps on. My alta is a little longer than stock (dont know if all are or not, and mine's an early one) so there's a bit of a fight compared to the stocker....

Also, the way the clamps work is pretty trick. The actually bend to make sure the force is more evenly distributed around the seal, and the get tightened till you can't turn the screws at all. So it's a very repleatable set up. The first couple of times, I was worried. But now I can tell by just looking when I'm done, if it's all sound.

The reason that I've been doing it so much is I DID lose a plug. And I've been paranoid since then. Also one of my plug wires got screwed up (I didn't notice how bad) and it would cause mis-fires, that I thought was poor IC installation (just a guess). Well, I've found the bad wire, and a new set is on the way. I haven't done the seals wrong yet.......

Randy has a review of the GRS on his site:

Matt, thanks for sharing your experiences. I won't let this be a factor as it was. And with the spark plug situation more under control, I'll go larger in the coming weeks...

And yes, Randy's review of the GRS was exceptional, in my opinion. As it currently stands, the GRS seems more desirable. This one (Forge) uses a welded core, as opposed to the GRS's bonded one. Also, the end tanks don't appear quite as nice as the GRS unit...

The price of the Forge is appealing though at 700 bucks. I'm leaning toward the GRS one though...

They also have this at Euro tyles East, $628 for the regular finish, and $655 for the polished finish.

Feedback is starting to trickle-in from the MINI2 folks. Some nice photos, but still not one with the hood closed:

Why is a bonded core more desirable?

The reason behind bonding (so I believe) is to reduce pressure loss...

Follow-up from MINI2 where a guy from VA has the unit. The good news, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that this unit does not obstruct the access to the spark plugs . The bad news, as suspected, it sits way too high . Can't have your cake and eat it also I guess...

And with no diverter, I'm feeling confident in this IC...

Ouch! That looks horrible. Having tested a large prototype intercooler that blocked the scoop like that, I can almost guarantee MUCH worse that stock performance.

i like the look of it ... but hopefully it serves a purpose too

FORGE have a big name over here in the uk so im sure they have tested it to the extremes ... id get a grille for your scoop next so no stones hit the blinging ally

Was this thing actually designed for the MCS, or did another application's bolt holes just happen to line up right? If that thing's designed for our cars, it better come with a new hood too...

Supposedly it was designed for the MCS... Just one of those things that I will look at the design, fit and finish and simply draw my own conclusions. Oh well...

It might not be so bad...

if the air can't escape down in front of the IC. But some air will "short" around the IC for sure if there's a path. I have an early Alta, and it sits high too. But not as much as that. I've been toying with the ideas of some sort of foam to make a seal around the front...... Maybe some wide Al tape would make a quick and dirty tester....
