Drivetrain M7 AGS Review
I wish we would see numbers somehow. I am not one of the skeptics, but am interested in what it makes. M7 said back in December that this unit outflows any on the market, and Randy posted a few times that they were testing every major intake out there. So based on M7's post it would have seemed that they already had the numbers, or they were lying. Also M7 said it made more power, so he must have had a dyno back in December. Peter or Randy can you post what you have? My guess is that no one has anything, and I doubt that any user will ever post a dyno on this, but hopefully I am wrong. I would really like to see the numbers, since it is a lot more work and $50 more than anything else on the market, and the sound clips haven't been so good, so I don't know what else to base my opinion on this intake.
Sorry for not being able to come on and chime in on the topic, as I am
currently in Hawaii enjoying some time with my distributor Andrew of Eastsidemini. Tank you Sid, Chris, and Ryan for your effort putting the AGS
in the car without any written instructions
.
All the rest of you, feel confident that the install manual will be first class
with pictures of the most critical parts of the install.
I installed an AGS yesterday and it was a big hit with the guys, and when
we reved the engine ........Yeeeeehhaaa

Sorry I don't have a way to get you a sound clip, if you come to the dragon I will happily take you around the block.
In my opinion it is a little quiter than the alta was with the windows up but the car has a more pronounced growl to it as it runs through the rpms.
I will say that both windows up and down, like JCampos said before, the MINI sounds like a jet engine and it is sweet!
Today I actually was trying to pay attention to the sound and when you get it above 4000 man does it sound unreal! I like it alot
Anyway.... now to figure out that pesky code problem....

Also I may have gotten rid of my service engine soon light but am still getting the EML light. I went and bought an ACTRON OBDII scanner today so I can fix these types of things in the future. The code I still get is P1498. Manufacturers Auxiliary Control Emission Controls.
No one seems to know what that one is all about. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I will probably drive all the way to the dragon with the EML light on

Matt, you may want to get the AGS... the added throttle response may just be all the help you need to get out of the driveway if you are chased.....
in all seriousness congratulations and good luck. that has to be one of the hardest parts. Asking the girl is easy, staring down the barrel of a loaded gun (at least that is the way it can feel) is a bit harder!
If for any reason you do make it find us and we'll make it happen!

Appreciate the pics but it's hard to see detail, have the link David's post? I tried searching on "AGS" but couldn't find it.

LOKI- not sure what kind of detail do you want? I can try and take some more pics again for you if you like. The big problem is space. everything is packed well in there that it is hard to get a good shot of different things. Let me know what you want and I will see what I can do to get it for you.

there is no way on earth you are pulling this out for service. Once in it is in for the duration or until the next mod.
There are extensions tubes, an extension harness and other bits and pieces that make this happen. Not to mention that you have to remove the bumper cover, the aluminum bumper frame and loosen the intercooler and radiator core to pull it forward at least 6 inches.....

Don't be mislead. It is very difficult to install when you don't have instructions. That said, the second time I accessed the AGS, I reduced the time from 2 hours to less than 1/2 hour. The whole job for the first time can take up to 4 hours...this includes reviewing the parts, reviewing the instructions, collecting your tools, jacking up the Mini, disassembly, etc. Now that I'm prepared, I could probably do the whole job in about 1.5 hours

Still this product seems very weird, but maybe when more information is out it may seem interesting. No pics, or pics where you can't see detail, an install that seems to be taking most people right now 4 hours, no numbers, very poor and partial sound clips, and people with EML lights going on after they have this installed (and the response from the manufacturer is to just restart a few times to make it go away)?
Can you help me understand exactly what you mean by 'smoother'? I see this expressed a lot here or various mods, but I'm not clear as to exactly what it means. I have gone from stock '05 to a JCW intake then to a 15% pulley and will be going MTH as soon as my files arrive. I can not understand what is smoother about the engine or throttle response. My car has not exhibited any signs of 'rough' running, or throttle response so far. The engine is vibration-free, has no rough sounds to the revving, the tach sweep and torque pull is seamless. I'm just not clear on what is being described as 'rough' and 'smooth'?
the Mini has a preliminary step called "placing the car in Service Mode" used for a variety of engine compartment tasks. Get used to it if you are going to be messing around in there. The goal is to move the radiator/fan forward enough to access whatever; for the AGS install, it is probably to get at the 2 small tubes going to the runner and the screw holding the runner to the blower. (Normally you don't need service mode to pull a TB, intake, ECU, air filter box, intercooler, bypass valve)
I've had mine there about ten times; Helix must have done it a thousand times. Pay attention to the various screws, there are many kinds, but after you commit and are used to it, it only takes 10 minutes to put into Service and ten to put it back.

So is this just a HAI type intake or is there something hidden that makes it better?
JLM- Can you fill me in on how to put the car in service mode? I was not aware of that and it would be nice for future use.
LOKI- Sorry I did not take any pre install pics as far as the parts are concerned.
kaelaria- smooth is a relative term in this case. The throttle seems to respond a little quicker and more evenly than it did before (this is all in my interpretation of it).
Some further observations:
Interestingly enough I have had the following 3 improvements:
1. Better gas mileage- at 70mph in 6th gear I am seeing 32.6 mpg constant. and no I was not getting that before
2. I am seeing lower radiator temp (I have the chrono guage package and it gives me fluid temp) I know where it usually sits and I am about 5-10 degrees cooler.
3. The car is quicker. Now I know I do not have numbers to prove this but what I do have is a straight fairly deserted road that in the past I can only get to 70 to have barely enough time to brake. Now I am getting to about 76mph before I have to get on the brakes. This is my way of saying it is quicker, feel free to poo poo my claims but they are mine and mine alone.

#1 - I get better than that very easily, it's closer to 40MPG cruising at 70.
#2 - that is in your head. The thermostat and ambient temps control that reading, nothing to do with an intake.
#3 - aren't butt-dynos the best

I am not sure why you would say it is in my head when the temp difference was immediate. I wanted to make sure after a few days that it was nothing else and it is noticably cooler but hey what do I know, I am probably blind and shouldn't be driving anyway.
Yup butt-dynos are great and there is the hard fact that I can get it up to speed quicker than before....
from memory:
-jack up the car so you can remove the splash shield (about 5 screws);
-in each fender well, disconnect the 6mm hex bolt, hidden in a vertical slot, per side;
-from the front, remove the two torx bolts holding the plastic bumper to the support, pry the bumper forward enough to reach and disconnect the electrical connectors, three per side (side and fog lamps) and unclip the ambient temp sensor from inside the bumper; put the bumper to the side let the connectors hang there.
-remove the approx 10 nuts holding the bumper support to the frame, (inside the aluminum cavities), and the two bolts and brackets at the radiator/support points; leave the two weird bolts with larger centering washers tight, as that will retain the bumper alignment. pull off the support.
-at this point, you should be able to move the radiator forward about 4" or so, fighting the hoses (check that all the clamps are loose) but to do so, you need to use a long bolt in two of the holes to hang it on.
