So... my exhaust whistles... I love the sound it makes, but I'm curious as to why it is being made. I've narrowed it down to the tail section of my exhaust (ALTA 2.5" Stealth on my R53). (narrowed it down b/c when I had that piece off, it didn't make the noise).
It only happens above 5k rpm or so, and if I go flat-out it does it almost basically all the way through 3rd and above. I never realized how loud it was until a track day at Texas World Speedway. I get into 4th gear as I'm entering the long strait, and get to the top of 4th at the end, the whole way down the strait my car sounds like a jet. My girlfriend's brother and brother-in-law (thought the whistle was coming from the wing at first) recorded it, so I'll post a video in just a few min.

The whistle is the exhaust gases blowing by passenger side exhaust tip. Think blowing over the top of a pop bottle.

Thanks for the post! I would like to help you. I wish you would have just called. I can switch the tip ASAP for you. Occasionally one will not get trimmed enough on the inside and it does that.

To get it fixed you have a couple options.

1) remove the tip and using a dremel or similar remove the excess material.

2) call us and ask for a replacement (some proof of purchase is needed bu no big deal) we can then exchange it.

3) Switch to an oval tip (see #2 for that procedure)

On the hangers etc. We get this concern occasionally. I run this system on my own R53 GP, and have had on other R53 variants in the past. If the hangers are tightened properly to the system and the supplied clamps used it will relieve the concern.

WE WANT TO HELP! Give us a call today 503-222-MINI

Thank you!

I'm not really worried about it, but i have noticed it will shake side to side if I tap it with my foot, and my friend said it moves around quite a bit in the road, but it's secure, just not stiff

about the exhaust whistle... I kinda like it, haha, but if I decide to change that, I'll just use a dremel, thanks

I have a 2008 MCS, installed the alta CAI, sounds great! when I start from stop at almost full throttle, or going slow suddenly full throttle, starting around 5000rpm I hear a sound kick in, it sounds like biiiiiiiiii, is that normal?? but if I drive it normally switching gears every 2500-3000rpm the biiiii sound doesn't exist.

Nivlek,

I would check all the connections for the from the cold air intake to the intake manifold to check for any boost leaks. It sounds like you may have a leak somewhere, let us know what you find out, thanks!

Hey thanks for the post.

Chris forgot to ask, this is in the GEN I section can I assume you have a 2008 MCS Convertible? If so the electric motor type sound under hard acceleration is totally normal in the SuperCharged car.

If this is a GEN II Hardtop then it is a turbocharged car, and as such the noise is likely the turbo building up pressure and as such makes a whooshing type noise.

It is always a good idea though to check the connections on either model.

Chat soon!

I've got the Alta 2.5 Sportone exhaust that I just love the sound of. Unfortunately, I also have the B&M short shifter kit that lowers the shifter housing about 1" into the exhaust channel, causing some interferrence with the Alta resonator that is on the backpipe. I had a very nasty rattle for a while, but that's what you get when you mod your car... it takes some work to get all the bits to work together correctly.

It is possible to get these bits to play together nicely. I replaced the Alta resonator with a bottle type unit from Vibrant that is much more sleek (and made the exhaust a tad bit louder :D ... probably why Alta didn't use a bottle type in the first place). It also took some adjustment of the lower exhaust brace (black square on the center undercarrage of the car with 6 bolts) to hang the exhaust just a smidge lower. I'm posting because we discussed this issue on this thread several months ago and I finally got everything squared away so no more exhaust rattle! It can be done!

One of the cool things about the Alta 2.5 is that it is a single sided exhaust, leaving you a nice big space under the car where that 2nd muffler used to be. Plenty of room for an air horn!

Here's a video clip with good audio of the exhaust at idle, with a little 3000-4000 RPM rev and, of course, a blast from the air horn (watch your volume!).

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...60924064999400

The Sportone is a beautifully made system and it sounds wonderful!

Pulley puller

Hi,

This week I ordered an Alta 15% SC pulley and AMP-ENG-208 SC pulley Tool via Beek Autoracing in the Netherlands and therefore renting a puller from Alta is a bit difficult.

Can you tell me what puller you use and where can I buy it or is it possible to accomodate me with the specs so I can search for this tool in the Netherlands?

Kind Regards,

Che

Hello,

We use a specific ALTA tool to remove the pulley. There are other choices out there, but you must find one specific to the OEM MINI pulley. A standard type puller will simply break either the S/C, or the pulley.

We can gladly sell and ship you what you need. Just contact our sales dept. so we can do so!

Thanks again!

So, I've looked through here quite a bit, and I don't think anyone has asked this question... What is the difference between the 2002/2003 short throw shifters and the 2004+ shifters? I know that the website says that the SSK for 2002/2003 won't fit any other models, but I was just curious as to what specs were different.

Without being graphic the 04+ has bigger *****! Simply won't fit into the older car, and vice versa.

Thanks for asking!

Pulley removal

I was wondering if there was any way to get the three bolt puller that is usually supplied with the pulley removal tool rental from ALTA? I bought the removal tool from someone on NAM and they didn't send the puller with the tool. If there's any way to buy it from ALTA or if anyone has one I'd be very happy to buy it.

Thanks
