Drivetrain Cheap Dyno or what.....
My question is..anyone familiar with this gizmo??
The price seems right and it would answer a lot of
questions I have regarding mods I've made and
ones I am planning. If it works as it says it does
it seems like a good investment to me. Thoughts?

$250 bucks.....hmmm
Says it measure RPM's directly from cigarette lighter voltage
Testimonials...."soon to come"
Dunno enough about it, but it seems...you get what u pay 4
If you can return it...what really do you have to loose
Just MHO

I didn't. It would be nice if someone here

Ordered. Overnight shipping. I'll definitely get back to
this post within 30 days. I did find out the companies
website has been up since 1996 so it is no fly by night
outfit.

They actually work pretty good. I had an offering from TAZZO and it worked pretty darn well. They are very sensitive instruments.
Each test has to be run from a complete stop and a relatively level road. You will find it is very difficult to find a good spot to open up the MINI for thses tests because you always feel Mr. Policeman won't understand that your just "testing" your car.
The Tazzo is less fancy but offers the same features( just not an LCD readout).
Tazzo cost less and of course are right in my home state of CO!
They all use accelerometers and algorithims to do the calculations.
I returned mine after 10 days of use because I felt I just couldn't run the tests in a metropolitan environment and I wanted to use it often without having to drive to a "special spot". My overall feeling is you won't use it as much as you think.
Tazzo had no problems returning it for me. Good company.

ficcion,
If I want to go back to stock...take of the cold air intake
and put back the original wheels and tires do I need to
drive the car so the ECU gets back to that 'memory' and
if so how long does the process take?
Thanks.

This little doo dad arrived yesterday. The only thing I really got
to try was the tach and seems accurate. I had to weigh the Mini
to program the weight in...came in at 2920 with me, 3/4s tank and
some misc. in the car. The weight has to be programmed in to figure
the HP/torque numbers which I probaly won't post until next week
some time..

I've got one and it's cool, but has a limitation or two:
until the new firmware comes out, it won't save results from more than one run (and you only get to review them one time, so bring a notebook), and it may ask you to re-calibrate when you don't really need to.
turn off dsc when you do your timed runs;

The GTechs are quite popular and respected. Like someone else said you need good flat roads to be accurate and you need to have the gtech mounted very flush in the center of the window so that is straight with the car. A lot of magazines have tested them and found them to be pretty accurate if used correctly. Though some of the measurements have bad points such as the 1/4 mile time top speed. Most places test the 1/4 mile speed with the average speed over the last 100 feet or something like that....where as the gtech uses your calcuated speed at 1/4 exact so it will be a tad higher then what you read. Also the GTech's don't work well in AWD vechicles. Also when you are doing any of the braking tests...if your car rocks forward hard(poor suspension - shouldn't be a problem with a MINI) that it can confuse it and continue to time even though you have stopped because the forward rocking.
Overall they are a great little tool that is cheaper then a dyno in the long run, the key to being accurate is doing many runs to make sure it didn't make an error.
Like someone else said - it is hard to find good roads to truly test it. It would be hard to explain to a cop when you were going in circles in a walmart parking lot.

jlm,
I have a great place to try it out....All of Florida is flat..
Do you have the pro version? I haven't tried yet but
the manual seems to indicat you can store runs and download
them to a computer...???

I agree. I have the original G-Tech pro and have a hard time finding somewhere to get a good reading. I live in Washington State so strait and flat for a 1/4 mile is very rare. However if you hook it up, you have an ongoing reading showing G's forward and back. Meaning you get a plus on the power and a negitive in between shifts and breaking. It tends to make you keep the hammer down. I haven't checked the MINI yet. I bought it for my Miata and got good readings from it.
Another thing to do, is get an exact weight of your car. It needs it, and putting in a guess weight will really throw off your HP and TQ. I suggest going to a truck stop and get the weight with you and/or passenger for a total weight. Mine doesn't have any download capibilities but often wanted something to keep track other than writing it down. If you can pick up the older one (it looks like a detector), It sticks great in the MINI on the lower left or right side of the speedo. The old one will probably phase out and go on sale. So if you can get one and can use a spreadsheet it would be worth it.
Hope this helps

A group at my bonneville forum were trying to get a group buy set up for the G-Tech. I think the price we were looking at for the group buy is around 200 dollars.
We don't have that many people in our club so getting 20 people together for a group buy is kind of hard. If you are interested go check it out here http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...amp;highlight=

Temp 56 degrees...
0-60 mph
1st run 7.719
2nd run 7.658
3rd run 7.247
I think with a few more runs that 0-60 time will
drop below 7. I was trying to watch the GTech,
the road and too many things at once. The third
run I focused mostly on the driving and it was the
best. I am not going to post HP numbers yet
because I am going to recalibrate and weigh the
car again and continue to read the manual. The
GTech Pro I have allows you to store multiple runs
and then download to a computer.
There was consistency in the HP/torque readings
but they seemed on the low side. The actual car weight
is critical when this thing does the HP/torque calculations
and I had less gas and fewer tools in the car than when
I weighed it. I also may put the car on a real dyno
before I install the Magnaflow exhaust as well and will
post those numbers down the road.
Thanks RandyBMC for your info and advice.

Thanks for the info 2minis. I'm waiting to get through my breakin miles and then I'm going to mod my MCS with an intake and exhaust. The MINI-Madness intake and Magnaflow exhaust are in the lead for me right now, but I like hearing some data to back it up.
I especially like the 56 degrees...though it feels like spring here today at 45 degrees!!

Glad to help, 2minis! Interesting research.
BTW, it was 65 today here in Denver, and tomorrow it's supposed to hit 70!
Don't tell anyone though
jimmer0, give me a call. I have some numbers from dyno tests done at a third party (read objective) location.
