So, guys! Hiya! Um, I don't know much about mods, but I like dpayne1's fat tyres!!! I have the standard 15" holeys...will the fatties work on MINIclo, too?

Cheers!

Clover: since dpayne1 is using these as autocross tires, there shouldn't be any problems with having them fit the stock wheels (since that would be one of the requirements in SCCA autocross).

With that out of the way, the question to ask yourself is which you place priority on when looking for a tire? Looks? Adhesion? Low tire noise? Durability? You can't have all of those at once.

Actually, I bet if you start a thread in the Tire and Wheel Forum many people more knowledgeable than I would be willing to help you sort this out.

225/50/15 BF Goodrich g-force TA KD tires are on the 15" wheels, the Kumho Ecsta 712s are my street tires - (215/45/17).

BTW, I have a set of the 16" X lites (Stock MCS Wheels) w/ the Kumho V700 R compound tires (205/45/16) - I used these twice last year for autox events - they are legal for DS (Now GS) -- They are for sale if anyone's interested.

Randy and I put my wheel/tire set up on his car with the H&R springs.

We got slight areas of "rubbing" on the back wheel wells upon signifigant compression of the springs ( hard cornering on uneven surfaces ).

We think there is a possiblity of a small mod to "recontour" the plastic under the wheel well to avoid the rubbing altogether.

The wheels look MUCH BETTER on the lowered car with the H&R springs. Probably the best look I have EVER SEEN on a MINI to date!! (Sorry didn't have a camera at the time.)

Sorry, we have already put the wheels back on my car.

You can get an idea in your minds eye if you just delete that space between the top of the tire and the wheel well  ...think much meaner, more aggressive stance.

Very nice job Jeff! Looks very real.

The H&R's tend to drop the backof the car even a bit more so the front to back stance is flatter unlike the stock springs"butt in the air thing".

Just a clarification...when you say wheel well, are you referring to the inside of the wheel well or the outside near the plastic fender? If it is the inside, would small spacers help?

Thanks for checking that out.

Right on the "internal edge" of the "outside plastic fender" is where it is rubbing.

A spacer would only increase the rub in this senario.

Gotcha. Now the question that needs (I need) to be answered, then, is will the 8 mm offset difference between the wheels that you have (40mm offset) versus the stock R84's offset (48mm) make a difference.

I would rather have a little rubbing on the outside where you are experiencing it than on the inside of the wheel well. Seems like the lip of the plastic fender could easily be "modified" (cut away or ground down) without much, if any, visual indication that it had been modified.

Thanks again for your work and comments.

A little more negatinve camber would fix the problem as well if additional negative camber is possible with the lowered car.

The stock 48mm offset (16" and 17" wheels) fits just fine with no rubbing. We have tried it with the H&R springs because DaveinDenver and Randy run both those combos. They are running 205's but I don't think 215's would matter with stock offset.

I think a 45mm or possibly a 43mm offset would work fine too, all other factors being the same. It is that close!

As to more negative camber in the rear...well we have too much already due to the lowering springs. Negative camber in the rear is not welcome when it comes to handling better. I would look at making a mod to the fender plastic before increasing the negative camber.

Now if that negative camber could just be on the front wheels!!!

This is part of the reason I would like to get coilovers, so that I can raise the back end (vs. the 1" drop of the H&R springs). I'd like to get 3/4" drop in the rear and an inch to 1 1/4" in the front.

Dumb question but the stock 17 with run flats are about 47 pounds how much would some ssr 17 with tires weigh? Ruff guess since each tire is going to be different.

Here is a great chart on wheel weights: CHART

SSR 17" will be about 12.7 lbs. A 17" tire will weigh more (generally speaking) than a 16" so lets say 22-23lbs.

A total weight of 34.7-35.7 lbs. per corner. And don't FORGET...a severe drain on the checkbook for the SSR's and the larger sized tire.
