LSD added to an 05' anyone?

Has anyone (who owns an 05') had the LSD added by the dealer? Is it possible. If so how much dot hey charge for the factory installed LSD> Basically I am too impatient to wait until tomorrow to ask the local MINI ship if so and how much.

If you did have it done what was your experience.

Price as an option at the time of purchase is $500 (prices of this and all options are on the miniusa website, by the way).

At this point the factory LSD is only available when spec'ing the car for purchase.

~$550 factory option, not possible to retro-fit.

I can just picture all of us scavenger pre-LSD-option MINI owners scouring the junkyards for some unlucky '05+ MCS w/LSD to liberate its transmission.

Now, the important question, how can one tell without tearing open the trans whether or not it has an LSD? Some of my friends have Miatas and apparently, their differential cases are identical with and without LSD. I don't think human hand-power is enough to engage the LSD either.

I would guess you could just pull an output flange, look at the diff and see the difference. It only take 5 minutes to split the case.......

What type of diff is the factory offering?

And you thought people stealing logo valve caps was bad - wait until people come out in the morning and find their transmission gone!! Buggered!

To (sort of) answer the original question, I've heard #s like $4K thrown about, as they'd need to replace the entire tranny. Bottom line, if you didn't order it, you don't get it. There's always the quaife for $1500...

Can someone explain then why I can spend the $1500 or so as mentioned for the quaife but cannot get the factory one? I am not saying one is better than the other, since I have no basis for comparison, but I do want to know the options.

Logic would dictate that if I can do an after market LSD then I should be able to order the factory one.

More appropriately I should be given an LSD education on how it is actually setup in the car so that I might better understand the install process. What goes on the after market install vs. a factory install?

Thanks!

Chris
