Drivetrain R53 General Rules for installing Camshaft
R53 General Rules for installing Camshaft
Hi All...
I just wanted to get some tips for wanting to install a Cam into my car.
Car is about 150k miles, should I just refresh the head at this point?
If I am doing the head, shouldn't I do the bottom end as well just to be safe? I have never installed a Cam in one of these cars so I am doing my own research, and will be doing the install myself.
Thank you!

And if compression is good (and equal) across all 4 cylinders, it is not necessary to pull the head (because the valves and ring seal are good enough, and someone has been maintaining this car). When replacing a cam is also a good time to switch to the JCW 380cc injectors, which will work well with a mild aftermarket cam and a factory tune. Install a set of NGK BKR7EIX plugs w/preset .032" gap (NGK #2667), and possibly think about a tune. At 150K miles, I would also be replacing the timing chain and the guide rails, because they wear (Mod MINI gets into that region of the engine at 9:57 of THIS video), and I would also change the often-leaky crank sensor & cam sensor O-rings.
