Turbo MCS is here?

Apparently this is minus the SC, so a stand-alone turbo (Garret GT28R twin ball bearing). Maybe it's my satelitte broadband, but I'm not able to do squat on this website:

http://www.paddockperformance.com

Supposedly there are some vids there. If someone can get in, do share...

Yeah, and somewhere else he states (over on MINI2) that it's 252 at the crank? Something is not right. I'm quite sure that's on an otherwise stock MCS (minus the SC), and the turbo tuned to sane levels...

I'm about 10 seconds into the drive by vid. It's taking forever to download!!! The exhaust sounds very nice so far...

why he is figuring 25% driveline loss is beyond me... watch how long it takes that car to spool

I'm about 3/4 the way into it, and I see what you mean about the delay... Are you planning to use the same turbo you have now when you ditch the Eaton?

More than likely...NO it won't be big enough for 400hp

Finally saw the whole thing. Looks like they did that at their shop (given the ASE sign). Also, they got 129 whp on a stock MCS? Heck, I'm accustomed to seeing nearly 20 over that. Sort of seems like some padding is going-on...

If you go larger to get that type of output, will you also have a not so fat bottom-end? From what you've shared earlier, it seems that you have some plans get some torque down low also... I suppose you don't want to divulge too much...

I know you don't mess-around (black)...

Well, I just thought I would share. PROMINI has Silver Sonic, but that (a turbo relacement) was never retailed, at least so I believe. I think this is the first. $5,400...

there is a lot to be said for all turbo if you can size the turbo right; it sure cleans up the engine compartment; and it ditches the 40hp parasitic loss from the blower.

of course there is the water pump issue (Promini used a Mini unit, good idea...makes use of the Mini seprntine belt and tensioner as well).

And you now can get a proper intercooler in there.

Why hasn't someone just done an engine swap? Seems like a lot of money $10,000 + going into rebuilding this engine to work right. Has anyone thought of just putting in an engine that already does 200+hp naturally aspirated, and built to higher specs.

like a B18 maybe? or maybe swap in a EJ20 drivetrain with the rear axle too! 4WD and 227 hp!

Some manufacturers use a 20-25% driveline loss to make their mod look more powerful. It's been done before so it wouldn't be surprising that someone did it again.

GT28 is a big turbo for a 1.6L motor. Can you say lag?

=================

He didn't address my comments about the rather large driveline loss used, nor the very low baseline (129 whp); both of which of course have the effect of padding the mod's impact...

The linear power band of a SC still seems more appealing for my driving pursuits... But, I totally like more options for us, not to mention the continued pushing of the envelope...

You guys really make me laugh!

If you want a turbo then why not just buy a car that already has one??? You can buy a Doge Neon SRT-4 for way less money than the MINI costs and it comes from the factory with 230 HP and an LSD (or even an all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Evo with 274 HP and Brembo brakes). With a simple factory authorized bump-up kit from Mopar, the SRT-4 will make 355 HP for under $20,000. It will absolutely blow away any modified MINI (even one with a turbo) for thousands upon thousands of dollars less. If you like the MINI for what it is, then why not leave it that way??? Why dump that much money into the car to make it something it was never intended/designed to be (and in five years will be completely worthless anyway). At the very least, why not just wait a year or so and buy the new version of the MINI that will be turbocharged from the factory?

Oh well, I guess it's like the old saying goes... A fool and his money are soon parted. Good luck with your turbos guys...

Is that some kind of special neon because I never heard of it unless you are referring to a SRT-4 and I don't think it's 20k for 355 hp. You are in the ballpark but you're not quite there. Plus, I understand that the warranty is void if you put on the MOPAR stuff...at least that's what my friend with a SRT-4 told me when I asked him about the MOPAR additions.

An EVO 8, I would buy..not the SRT-4. Of course, the EVO is way different and attracts a different kind of owner, etc. And it's not as pretty a cooper. But it does have four doors and a fully functional trunk. And with a 2k of mods it will be a 12 sec quarter mile car and still idle in the IN N Out drive thru without a problem.

Oops! Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry for the typo. I've changed it now.

As for the other cars being cheap and ugly looking. I totally agree. However, they are very fast and for way less money than a nicely equipped stock MCS (not to mention a heavily modified one where the supercharger has been exchanged for a turbocharger, etc.). Thus, why not just leave the MINI to its intended purpose and buy one of these other fast cars if you want a turbo with speed??? Or better yet, just buy a super bike for half the price if you want to go that fast. A nicely modified MINI (with pulley, exhaust, ECU mod, etc.) is plenty fast isn't it?
