First time posting. I am doing a 6 speed swap on my R50. I also am converting over to a single mass flywheel but has anyone bought the M pact single mass flywheel conversion kit from rock auto? How is it compared to the valeo kit? Is about $100 cheaper, but why?
Why indeed. The Valeo SMF kit is highly regarded in the Mini community.
You can buy the cheaper kit and roll the dice or spend a little more a get a known, good product.
That said, when I replaced my clutch, I stuck with a DMF. New clutch kit and DMF from LUK purchased from FCP Euro. Why did I stick with a DMF? I'm not sure. I guess I didn't want anything to change. Maybe next clutch I'll try SMF.
I installed the Valeo single-mass and love it. Because the clutch is such a PITA to replace, I would stay with the Valeo rather than take a chance on a much cheaper alternative.
@cooper48 Is your car a DD or a track car? I'm curious if the road manners of the Valeo SMF are worse than the DMF. In particular, low RPM vibrations and noise.
My MC40 is a DD. The Valeo road manners are perfect, plus it has a much lighter clutch feel than the stock DMF. There are no low RPM vibrations or noise. My MINI was dynoed at 197.50hp at the wheel and the Valeo handles it easily. I highly recommend it.
I have used the Valeo and the Sachs units, booth good. If you daily go with the DMF from valeo. If you are pushing power go with a performance clutch. If you are OEM+ just go stock to stock with an valeo or sachs dual mass.
You cannot resurface a dual mass flywheel. Only the single mass.

What...do you consider, "pushing power" is ?
I bought a new "posi" unit, because the one in my car "ISN'T" anymore. According to the "build sheet"...yes it has one. But only one tire spins in most occasions.
Anyway, I figured that since I'll be inside, I may as well replace the clutch and main seal also. I'm used to old American Iron with a solid flywheel, and sprung disc.
BUT, the Mini wasn't born that way ! My 05, JCW was dyno'd at 211hp.
Where exactly, would that horse power line be drawn, power wise ?
Yes, my car is a daily driver, but as spirited as I can !
I don’t want the aluminum flywheel gotta be steel with OEM Valeo Clutch..
So many have recommended the single mass over dual, but I don’t know now… (1) if there is any gain or driving pleasure with single mass if I will only be cruising the canyons about 2k miles annually… (2) I think OEM dual mass with OEM clutch won’t be any cheaper than $1200.
thanks again! I purchased the flywheel juts as y’all were right on with price there :-) But your clutch kit is more than double Amazon and still way above Rock Auto.
Make sure it the same. We some part number on rock and amazon not the exact part but masked and error in their data. PM me the parts you found and i can dig in.
