Drivetrain JCW turbo/ manifold swap questions
JCW turbo/ manifold swap questions
I am swapping my 2009 Clubman S automatic exhaust manifold out for JCW (in the mail) and probably a JCW turbo. Looking at JMTC version, but don’t know if as reliable as OE. Has upgraded intercooler and K&N panel filter. Replaced damn near all fuel and spark components, hpfp, coils, plugs, vac pump etc have all been replaced. Doubt I’ll go past stage 2 honestly if that.
Question 1. Will the stock DP and plugs be ok for a while with JCW turbo? I’ve seen threads and see mixed opinions on stock tune. I’ll likely get the 1422 plugs if the stock tune can work with that.
Question 2. What tuning options are there for aftermarket DPs? I’m looking at 100-200 cell, knowing it’ll likely throw a CEL. Unfortunately my state is a “ readiness” state for DP (can’t be a fail status).
thanks in advance!

I would steer clear of the JMTC turbos, since their quality control isn’t the greatest. I would suggest either a Borg Warner Airworks turbo or a genuine JCW turbo.
Get the 1422 plugs only if getting a tune. They are 2 steps colder than the S plugs, and 1 step colder than JCW plugs.
Stock downpipe should be fine with the JCW turbo and no tune. You’ll need high flow downpipe if you go with a new tune. Get in touch with @Lou@Prototype-R for tune options. He can customize your ECU calibration to the parts you have installed, and get you running as hard as you want.

My research suggests the AR Design down pipe might give you issue with the installation due to the diameter. If you're looking at getting a tune anyway, I would just get a Way Motors cat-less down pipe, and put the saved money towards something else.
I can’t confirm, yet, that any available tunes can deal with a readiness check vs just killing the CEL light. I’ve had BMW tunes that passed here and Audi/VW tunes that did not. I’d go stage 2 if I could confirm that. I’ve gone sport cat and 02 bends and dongles to eliminate codes before, but R56 ecu and turbos are new to me. If I find out it can be dealt with I’ll buy a dp and install same time as turbo/manifold. Otherwise I’m just gonna piecemeal mods like JCW tune after that.
@Lou@Prototype-R has an option for "Readiness+" on his tune. It effectively sets all your OBD readiness monitors to "green". I passed New York state emissions testing this year without hiccup on his tune, and I have a cat-less down pipe. In New York they use an OBD check for emissions, and you are allowed one pending or not ready monitor and you will pass. My OBD readiness monitors always show as ready, so no issue for me. Passing emissions testing in your state will be depend on how your state's test is run.
