Drivetrain Lsd
Lsd
Does anyone know the average time it should take an experienced shop to install a LSD? I'm picking up an 06 r53 with 73k miles and want to have one installed. I wil probably have a new clutch installed at the same time but in case I don't, I'd like to get an idea of how long it takes so I can figure out how much it's going to cost.
For an experienced shop (that's installed a couple LSDs previously and has their own bearing press), it will probably add 1.5 hours to a clutch job.
FYI: ModMini has an excellent video on a Quaife install that will show you what's required.

Having done the job, for an estimate, this is probably reasonable. Also, I wouldn’t considering paying to have the job done WITHOUT replacing the clutch.
That's a great price for a dealer! When I swapped out my open diff on my '03, it only took me a couple hours to get it apart, and press on the new bearings. It's so much easier than working on a RWD pumpkin as you're not setting any backlash etc.. I will say though, that while it's apart, make sure you change out the slave rod bushing on the fork that opens and closes the pressure plate, as well as changing the snout of the input shaft. These wear out, even if you have low miles, and the pedal feel was so much better afterwards. Check your output seals on the axles to see if they're seeping oil. Best time to change them while it's all apart!

thanks for all the replies . is there a consensus on which lsd is better, a quaife or a wavetrac. from the prices i've seen, the quaife is 899.00 and the wavetrac is 1065.00. ive been away from modding cars since 2011 and ive never heard of wavetrac before.

Your post is using an offensive slur to refer to gender orientation. It's not funny, it's hateful and rude. I'd encourage you to take it down and try to be more kind and respectful.
I think we all need to remember that these forums speak to a diverse audience.
Let's get back to putting a LSD in a Mini. . .
Yep, that's for two of Mini's overpriced 1.6ml tubes of 518 Loctite.
You can buy the 2ml version of 518 Loctite for $6/ea via Amazon Prime. That will be more than enough anaerobic to seal up the "tranny" (common shorthand for transmission for more than 60 years in the performance industry).
Ripper, please define "better"
. I have seen no side-by-side performance testing that indicates Wavetrac is any better than Quaife. Both are gear-type LSD's. Wavetrac claims "newer-better" technology than Quaife, but I'd like to see the measured results. Anybody else?
For serious track cars with aggressive drivers, OS Giken has some measurable performance advantages, but it's also reportedly noisy, pricey and may require occasional tuning, so maybe not in a daily driver.

Are the bushings you're talking about #5 and #6?

And,
what do you mean by the 'snout of the input shaft'?
Thanks.
replace #2 at a minimum also #1 #5 and #6. I have seen leaking input (#2) and axle shaft seals, have not seen the other parts wear out but they are cheap and you are right there anyway...
wouldn't these parts be changed out by shop if I was having lsd and clutch replaced at the same time?
I don't know, but i worked on few R50 conversion for 6-speed gearbox , without recoding in EMS for Getrag transmission and in ABS -MK60 module- for 6 speed transmission, the car was not driving properly.
Great info and probably something worth doing to be 100%! I will give my anecdotal experience with throwing in a Quaife LSD on my old '03 that had an open diff; I had no drivability or issues (throwing codes) with the car.
