Which Intake?

Looking to buy a new intake for my 04 Cooper (non S). I want something that makes decent gains, and has a nice sound. I've heard good things about the BMP/Promini and Viper Pipercross, as well as the K&N or Mini Mania. Anyone have any insights to these?

Thanks!

I don't have an intake, but in my research I rarely see anyone disappointed with the model they've put on their car. I have seen the most people impressed by the Alta (Webb Motorsports claims it has the highest gains). Honesty though, they all seem very close number-wise. Bringing more air in is the main thing, and all intakes do that. Check out the thread "Operation Hot Air Intake" for a unique perspective on what bells and whistles are important on intakes and which may be extraneous.

I'm personally waiting for the new M7 Air Gain System to come out. It is the only system that is fundamentally different from the other intakes out there, and M7 claims it is greatly superior to other models. So much so, that they are patenting it. Price will be a little higher ($295 or so). I'm just waiting for the dyno charts.

I have the Promini/BMP and its a easy install and the gains are good. The intake noise is very evident at 2500+ RPMs. Once of my friends says that at 5k plus the car sounds like it has a supercharger with it. As far as I know the Viper has the best gains over all the intake for the MC.

I have the Alta and love it!

Since you have an MC though you are limited in your intake options. As far as I know the Alta is only for the S as is the BMP. Since the MC has the battery under the bonnett as opoposed to being in the boot it makes for a different airbox design (I may be completely wrong but the offerings are quite different).

Expense is going to be your biggest enemy. Pipercross seems to make the models with the most gain but you are spending a minimum of $227 or so and up to $329 (from Randy at Webb motorsports) for the full induction piece.

I would recommend you give Randy a call. He can atleast give you the scoop on them all and even help you through the installation!

Good luck!

Chris

Both the MiniMania and the Viper intakes are enclosed systems, so whatever sound they make will be subtle. Both of these supposedly make the best numbers. The Viper is very pricey. Most people that get a cheaper intake (around $100), myself included, are not disappointed. Someone that had both the Promini and the K&N Typhoon, preferred the K&N for fit, finish and sound. The Mania is probably the hardest to install, as you have to remove the resonator. With this system you can throw back in your stock filter if desired.

thanks for all the comments everyone right now i'm in a lock between the Promini and the K&N. They're both about the same price, and I've heard good things about both. Does anyone have a sound clip of these two intakes?

Are you going to Vegas in March ? If so why not wait till then and listen to what other people have. I would guess some of everything available will be there.

I see you got your choices narrowed but I have to throw in me 2cents
I have the ALTA with the hose and I dig it
Sounds good, looks good and the sound still puts a grin on me face.
Randy's site does break down his recomendations on the different intakes.
Enjoy whichever you take!

Actually I'm hoping I'm able to go, Vegas is quite far from me, but if I go, I'll definetely wait and check out intakes there

Intake confusion

I've read too many threads. Can any of you guys help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for an intake for my '06 MCSa and came across the
K&N Typhoon short ram intake.

A. Will this fit on my '06 auto?
B. Since it's not a ture CAI what the pro and con?

or am I better going with the Alta or even the Webb with induction box.

Thanks again

Studog

I have the K&N Typhoon intake and like it but only because I modified it to take care of it's inherent weaknesses. I added two additional walls to form a box so hot air is not sucked in and I insulated the metal intake tube with some aluminized cloth designed to resist temperatures up to 1500 degress. The intake tube would conduct a lot of heat down into the throttle body plus with the additional hot air being suck in I could feel HP loss.

I would recommend the WMS intake. It is completely sealed away from the hot air under the hood and uses a non-metalic intake tube.

Folks such as the highly respected Randy Webb say the K&N CAI isn't very good. That the Alta CAI or his HDI box are much better. Both of these fit the MCSa. If you choose the Alta then they offer a replacement intake hose. I just fited one to my car.
