Maximum RPM anyone's turned in a MCS

I was just wondering what the max rpm that anyone's ever turned in their MCS?

Factory indicated max rpm is 6600 rpm I believe and it was quoted in Motor Trend this month as well.

What pulley are you running- stock or 15/17/19/21%?

I'm assuming the pop pop bang bang is the factory rev limiter coming in?

I have mine reset to 7250 (mth retune) and the motor doesnt seem to have a problem with that. I believe Eldiablorojo was talking about raising his rev limiter for his twincharged mcs to 7500. I have the factory pulley exhaust alta intake mth retune and intercooler diverter and the pull drops off significantly after 6900.

Yea, popping is the limiter.
15% pulley. Check my link below for other mods if you like.

The highest I can confrim is 7,500 RPM with an aftermarket ECU program.

Yes, stock rev limit on Cooper 5-speed and MCS is 6950 RPM

SEE !

An MTH tune with a 7200 RPM rev limiter is very much "correct".

Um... Dont laugh, but one time by an accident, I was being teased by a rice rocket, and we started going at it then I went to power shift into fourth and it turned out to be 2!!!! I ended up making it red line at 8200RPM!!!!!! It was scary and insane at the same time.. I thought there would have been a safety. .. guess not..

How can any redline be "correct"?

It all depends on the vehicle setup and application.

What software company offers the 7500 rpm rev limiter? Will MTH do this for you? Deffinately will come in handy if that brings the top mph in second gear to around 75. Just right for the local 1/8th mile. Is there any dyno charts with the stock pulley reving this high?

Also, yes I made a mistake by saying the MTH redline is 7250. It is 7200.

There is NO "safety" when downshifting in a manual trans car. How could there be? The rev limiter only shuts off the fuel when you hit it while accelerating. When downshifting, if you're going too fast for a given gear, then you're going too fast for that gear - period. It's mechanical - the ECU can't do anything about it. I can't believe you hit 8200 RPMs and your engine didn't blow. That's actually great to hear that your engine was strong enough to handle that. The resistance you felt in the clutch going into second should have been your clue that you were in the wrong gear. Next time a mistake like that could very likely be fatal to your MINI.

I know, I did not mean electronically, but usually manual transmissions dont allow you to go into the wrong gear if you are going too fast for it. For example if your flying in second gear, and try to downshift to first - and I know you are not supposed to do that but its just an example - it will not allow you to put it in gear. I know there should have been some resistance but there was not jsut went in like butter

There is resistance when going into 1st gear but not others. The only difference you might have is that the syncros would have a much harder time getting into 2nd than 4th so it might grind the gears.

It's better to double clutch downshifts anyway so the syncros don't have to carry the weight of the car when you pop down a gear (or 2,4...). That way, when you rev match, you'll know instantaneously if you have the right gear because you know what rpm you should be doing in that particular gear. If you start letting the clutch out and the revs climb quickly, then your in the wrong gear.

While this is clearly MCS owners speaking here, I was surprised to hear the rev limit is @ 6950RPM. I have a 2003 Cooper (non-S) & I've taken it past 7000RPMs routinely in first & second gear. I have yet to encounter the rev limiter come on, even when taken to 130MPH. That's with stock software. Is there any accuracy issue with the factory speedo & tach?

Most factory tachs read high. I'm guessing the mini is no different since I've been above an indicated 7000 on several occasions.
