jlm owns more than one MCS engine and has probably forgotten more about metallurgy than I have learned.

Hi...

Stock pistons ARE forged......but the rods are a powdered metal castings.
You can see the parting line in the rod from the mold they are supposedly
forged....buuuut.

Are you talking about the MC or the MCS rods? I don't have firsthand experience with them but from the powetrain document:

The connecting rods have also been fundamentally modified. The basic engine is fitted with sintered rods, but the Mini Cooper S uses a forged version with computer optimised geometry. As with the basic sintered version, these rods are “cracked”.

Mini claims the Mini has sintered rods, but the S has forged rods. They also claim both are "cracked" to produce the journal parting line.

Hi guys,

But the main matter here is what maximum power can the factory stock engine able to take. And also the Getrag gearbox.

What's the safe maximum power can the factory stock engine and getrag gearbox takes?

Thanks.

Peter.

My guess would be ~350-400 for the engine and below 300 for the tranny. The engine is quite beefy, for a tiny 1.6. I wish it had twin cams though :(

Hi Barnabas,

Thanks for your info.I hope it's as close as to the actual result of the factory engine.

Hi Macncheese,

I got your info on the engine and drivetrain of the original 'S'.Thanks,it helped a lots for our better understanding towards the car.

But are you able to provide the link or info on the figures result as stated in the info? The pdf file of your info does not include the figures results.

I will be much appreciate if you could able to provide it.

Thankyou once again.

Peter.

I can't recall reading reports of any power-related transmission failures in the MCS.

Me either, and hope it stays that way Another appropriate question would be, what can the clutch take?

So the cost of making a remotely drivable 350+ HP MCS would be what compared to getting a new C6 vette (or dare I drool the new Z06).

The problems are huge here and aren't limited to seeing how much hp you can get out of the stock MINI motor.

If you had that much power you need 265+ width tires for a rear wheel drive car which benefits from rearward weight transfer when accelerating. You either need to switch to a 4WD drivetrain or do some major body work to get wide enough tires to get that power down. Plus, you are talking tons of money going into the rest of the drivetrain.

Now what would be BAD @$$ is sticking a EVO drivetrain into the MCS. Probably couldn't do it, but when those start getting rear ended and totaled the engines might be cheap enough to swap more cheaply than doing big mods to the MINI engine (when you consider that you could re-sell the complete MINI engine/supercharger/ etc. )

BTW I'd love to see how a lightened MINI with 287hp like that PROMINI one does on those 205 width tires. I can't even imagine that wheelspin.

What's needed is one of these: Getrag "Twinster" Tranny (where's that drool emoticon?)

Turbo, Twin charge, or Twin-screw S/C MINI (anything that gets ya near 300 bhp) & and one of these. Then… look out! MINI gets respect now, but a T/C TWINSTER would command respect.

contrary to popular belief... the stock pistons are NOT forged. I talked to an engineer who worked for BMW designing the engine in the mini.

I thought it was mainly Chrysler that did the engine work. It sounds like BMW just gave a specs list of sorts to Chrysler and let them design it.

he was interested in seeing how SPI has developed the engine to run 12s...
he was very impressed. He was running a Karman Ghia which weighed 1500lbs with him in it.... pretty cool set up. Had some trick things in the car

I just made the 350+ mile trip back from Helix with the Twincharge. Words cannot describe what the car can do now.
It's awesome. I thought the nitrous was good but this is nitrous times 10. With the new stage 3 clutch and the phantom grip (yes, did my research and am glad I went with it) it just goes, goes, goes. Unfortunately the roads were wet most of the way home but when the pavement was dry and I could hook up the tires the acceleration is amazing.
Eric did a stellar job and is a great guy to work with.
