R56 N18B16A, swapped for an R60 N18B16A

Hi All- First post here- I hope it's in the right place...A couple of weeks ago I bought my first Mini, a 2012 R56 S manufacture date 4/2012 with a motor that overheated and showed no compression on 2 cylinders (coolant leak). I paid $500, it was a friends car. It has 109k miles on it and is in good shape for a car it's age. Yesterday I found a N18B16A engine with less than 2k miles on it from a 2015 N60 manufactured 7/14. It's been palleted dry, in a warehouse since 3/16. That's a long time for it to sit, but it ran fine last time it started. I can get that engine installed, out the door for about $5200 with a 12 month warranty (i'm not doing the work). I'm curious if I should expect any issues taking the same platform, but from another model and installing it in the 2012 R56. Has anyone here tried something similar and care to share? I'm full of cautious optimism here, the car will be for my son if we can get it up and running correctly.

$5200 is alot of money for an engine and its installation. Try car-part.com for cheaper engines.

Next, is the current engine rebuildable?

Finally, in mid 2012 N18 engines were fitted with bosch high press fuel pumps. Those are NOT interchangeable with the ones with continental HPFP.

Quick review of engines available in the US shows anywhere from $2 to $3k to be a common price. $150 to ship, $1700 for install, about $300 in tax. Appreciate the insight provided by that link.

Next, is the current engine rebuildable? I'm not certain if there was damage to the cylinder walls or not. I only know there wasn't compression in 2 and 4. I'll be sure to check it out in detail next week

Appreciate this as well. Will do some digging and hope the fuel pump on the new engine is good.

Check for parts that you will want to replace when you have the engine out, which will depend on what your replacement engine comes with. For example - the auxiliary water pump that cools the turbo should be replaced if the replacement engine (assuming use of a newer engine) doesn’t come with its own. This was a MINI recall item for the 2012 MINIs. I would check (do some searches) to see if there are any other parts like the aux water pump that should be replaced when you have the engine out. Can’t think of anything else right now. Hope it goes well for you.

Thanks Eddie. The car was serviced at the dealer in town, so I should have access to recall activity and repairs from them. Good advice!

Even if the new fuel pump is good you can't swap to the new Bosch pump if you didn't originally have a Bosch pump. The wiring is different, and the ECU will not run the Bosch pump even if you wire it up. So make sure you get an engine that has the same fuel pump setup you currently have.
