Clutch and Flywheel options

I think that I have finally settled on purchasing the Quaife LSD for my 06 r53. Since I'll be in there, I might as well swap the clutch (It has 132k but zero issues) Anyway, I recall pulling the Dual Mass Clutch from my 5 series a while back and swapping to a Single and and a light weight flywheel. It was more responsive but rattled like a tractor at idle. Not looking to do that again.

Curious to know if the light weight offerings have the issue with rattling on these cars.

Recommendations are welcome.

I used the Valeo clutch and flywheel when I converted my 2003 R50 to a Getrag 6-speed (put a Quaife in it as well).
It's only slightly lighter than the dual mass oem unit but a bit cheaper and very reliable and roadworthy.
No rattle or trouble taking off like you usually get with lightweight flywheels.
Also not prone to imitating Chewbacca like older dual mass flywheels often eventually do.

Valeo for moderate power and good feel. https://www.ecstuning.com/News/R53_R...ion_Kit_19376/

OS Giken and others for bigger power and smoky burnouts.

My Exedy rattles just slightly, it's very minor and of course only at idle with no pedal tension. Very minor trade off for the extra grip for my HP level.

I used an OEM LUK clutch kit and flywheel for like CAD $400 from Rock Auto. 236whp is handled perfectly fine and feels 100% stock.

Like Cristo said, the Valeo single-mass conversion makes for a very good daily driver (and quiet) with horsepower up into the 230-240 range (presuming we aren't talking drag racing). It weighs a bit less than the dual-mass flywheel (24# vs. 25.5#).

Running a solid-hub clutch plate with a solid flywheel is noisy; sprung-hub clutch w/ solid flywheel less so. Lightweight flywheels (under 15#) can be noisier than heavier flywheels, seemingly amplifying gearbox noise. A lightweight flywheel is a good choice for an auto-X or track car because it feels more responsive and revs faster. Lightweight won't feel like a good choice when you have to dive across lanes of fast moving traffic from a stop sign. This is particularly true for the "S" models which are relatively low-compression and low torque at lower RPM (not under boost). This is also why the R53 comes with a 8# heavier flywheel than the R50, which has a higher static compression ratio.

Just my 2¢

We offer many choices, but in our shop we have had good luck with the valeo kit
https://www.waymotorworks.com/valeo-...l-kit-r53.html

But if you want more performance the SB stage2 we have used and actually just installed one today have been pretty good and reliable without being too stiff.

And of course we got your Quaife for you
