Sorry to hear about that beautiful structure

But I will say that Ring Door Bells haven’t proliferated around this country because Oregon is the only place that has ingrates. Look at what is currently happening in our National Parks because there are those who think they can do anything if there is no one to stop them. And some of them are stupid enough to post it on YouTube. :raz:

On the other hand, people can be generous to a fault. I bet it there was a Go Fund Me page opened to restore that place, the money would be there in a day.

There are all kinds in this world.

washed the dirty butt

We have a few days of extremely mild January here in Oregon (AlreadyGone). A day time high of 52 so Desire get a head to toe bath. Her last wash was in October so needless to say, the butt is filthy. There are also black streaks from rubber marbles playing on tracks which I removed with some spot waxing after the bubble bath. The stubborn grimes on Desire's butt took a lot of rubbing to scrubbed clean.

We went grocery shopping as I wanted to get a Korean onggi.

being miniature Desire squeezed through the gap between the planter and the lamp post pilaster into a protected parking spot - most people doesn't want to park near the concrete pilaster

I found a Kimchi Onggi at this Korean supermarket so mission completed

the sun just began to set

year of the hog

2019 is the year of the hog. Pig, swine, bore, or bore depends on the gender and the age. Desire is a hog, and a miniature one.

My mini hog can't wait to get out to the track soon, with renewed vigor .

Happy New Year - Hog!

Tis a distant dream right now about stretching our legs on any sort track. It is -8 F (not “C”) right now and we are in the throws of cleaning up from yesterday’s 15ish inch snow fall.

Thanks. I wish your Mini's prosperity on tracks and continuous longevity.

I know how you feel being buried by the snow. We have been under the assault of the east winds for a whole week. Our southern neighbor Northern CA got crazy amount of rain that mother of nature normally dump here in the PNW. Hang in there as spring will be on the door step before we know it. I am dreading getting the long list of maintenance done before Mini hog is deemed safe and shipshape.

I am going to make good use of the piggy calendar to mark down all the available track days. Need some color coding to discern different organizations.

Other than “poor MINI”, and “it’s not my MINI” and it’s not on a track and the telephone pole didn’t dent the roof,, you got me...

You got me too.

Wild guess would be Black Swan due to the ballet shoes?

I briefly browsed here:

But still no luck.

You are getting close , but not close enough. A hint - a recent performance in Chicago.

I thought it would be good to post the link before the shelf life of this performance on PBS streaming expires (feb 14). It is Orphée et Eurydice by Lyric Opera of Chicago in the Paris version.

If you don't have 2 hours here is the "trailer"

Here is the performance home page on LOC. I just realized that I was wrong about the dates of the performance. It took place in winter of 2017.

what shall i do without eurydice?

The R50 appears briefly at 0:05:46, and at 1:25:10 in the full length LOC performed opera above.

Every opera that withstood the test of time has at least one catchy aria, and for this is "What shall I do without Eurydice". I really like this one by Philippe Jaroussky that is sung in Italian rather than in French. I speak no Italian nor French but Italian is a language more suited for Opera. So hard to imagine that this was first performed in 1762.

The same aria in French in the LOC performance is shortly after the second Mini appearance starting at 1:25:10.

back to the basics

Back to the more relevant topic. Our club days 2019 schedule has been published. We will have 25 days of scheduled drive at your own risk fun, starting late March and ends in late October. And if you don't have enough you can always request for additional unscheduled club days. Per the management you can request any day between Jan 1 to Dec 31 . Anyone knows where I can get tires with steel spikes for ice racing?

Great funs are never free and require a lot of fund to fund the fun. Guess what, I received this email that kindly notify me that my account is locked and all I have to do is to click on the Log in link.

Hmmm! Who is FifthThird Bank? I need fund to fund my fun bad so I should just get my access to the fund.

Actually. I do!
They are called “super studs” and the ice racers around here use them. They are 1/4-20 bolts through the tire and sharpened on the end....

Around here, we actually have winter car control clinics at Lime Rock Park. I doubt they allow the super studs, though...

Best wishes to you on your up coming season!

spring is just around the corner

Today it felt like spring is just around the corner. It was 54F, sunny, and calm wind. Mini hog got to stretch the legs hooves and I snapped a few shots.

Desire is a bit antisocial

I have been on the lookout for a sludge hammer and bought this bad boy; will need it to replace Desire's axle which I suspect is on the way out

Nice that someone has good weather to enjoy...

It was -2 degF here this morning (some places close by are -10 to -20 degF air temp), with a beautiful sunrise and blue skies, but that is it. The cold weather package option on the MINI was well worth the money. Heated mirrors, heated windshield washer nozzles and (trumpets blaring here) heated seats. Yesterday we had snow squalls come through the dropped visibility to less than 100 ft and that is 100 ft to see tail lights, not the car. It was really scary to make a left turn, because I couldn’t see the oncoming cars until they got to the intersection.

Keep the pictures coming as they give the rest of us something to look forward to...

I feel for you folks across most of the continent under the cold dead grips of old man winter. I used to live over there and know what freeze one's butt is like, and having to dig the driveway clear of snow before you can think of driving to work.

Today is the last of spring like day before rain returns. Mini hog got out trotting about again. No glamour photo ops though.

The weatherman is talking about the possibility of snow in a few days, and the ODOT spokesperson was gushing they now have a stock pile of road salt to use in increase number of streets. When asked what about some citizens' concern of the salt causing corrosion to their cars, his reply was we are using non-corrosive salt.

The Wrangler takes care of any snow issues; it will drive over most any that we get. It does “slow” really well. I am also an avid skier, so I enjoy the snow. It is the frigid cold that gets to me. I have skied at -25 deg F air temp, but not any more.

They use a brine solution around here and it is far more corrosive than the rock salt. Not sure why it would be, but it is. My guess is that it more easily gets into places to corrode them. It’s good your road crews have found a “non-corrosive” salt to use and you don’t have to worry about your car. But I suspect that it is probably as expensive as the unobtainium metal we used at work...

I'm certain brine is what rusted out of my first and beloved R53 (RIP!). It only took 7 Chicago winters to rust out everything behind the doors. MINI paid $15k to have a body shop replace the both rear sides and the boot. Never looked the same, I could tell.

I now see it all over up here in Seattle when the forecast calls for temps below 40F. Fortunately it rains quite a bit and I wash my cars frequently.

Portland seldom use salt but with sand up to recent years. With the last few snow storms that shut down the city for a few days people demanding more salt to be used and ODOT was too happy to comply. So funny to observed them being inexperience to start with and slowly they get more and more salt, and gush about how effective they are. Of course all salts are corrosive to steel and there is no such thing as non-corrosive salt. The brine does the most damage as they get into the crevasses and stay there. When the temperature warms the faster is the oxidation reduction. If your car is soaked in brine, it is best to leave it outside than to park in a warm garage.

The nasty road salt ate my Fiat 124 Sport Coupe in two winters.

In PNW we are blessed that there is a lot of rain that wash the road salt away. When there is salt on the road Mini is on curfew.

OMG!

I HAD A 1972 FIAT 124 SPYDER!

That the NE salt ate up in 2 winters also. That was one of the most fun cars I have owned. Even next to the MINI. Salt and the high carbon, high strength steel they used without any rust protection did it in.

During the winter I do a hot water rinse of the underside of our MINIs every chance I get. I run a hose from the washing machine wash tub faucet and have one of those long plant watering wands and can really get under it. Our 2004 Cooper has no body rust and I credit doing that to a good part of saving it.

Good to hear we have the 124 twins. The 124 coupe was a poor man's Lancia Fuvia or Alfa GTV. It has many design cues of the Fuvia. These cars were so ahead of their time and have all the coveted performance check-off items. It is one of my most memorable cars. FIAT received the underserved joke of "fix it again Tony", but in reality the engineering were as good as BMW (2002 era) in the day and were willing to go farther. Most of the problem in North America were due to incompetent mechanics who didn't like working in tight quarter, and most are ignorant of more intricate and more complex performance design rather than brute-force engineering.

When I lived in the snow belt I did the same in blasting the underside and wheel wells every chance I got. Still cars of that era just wasn't designed with rust resistance in mind.

the hog year kicks off to a start

Happy Lunar New Year! The year of the hog got off to the start today, with happy hooves.

Mini hog basking in the winter sun only a couple of days ago

What a few days's weather made. We have a dust of snow and Desire is grounded by curfew to protect her from herself. As it is customary to give gift on the Lunar New Year she got not one, but two sets of high friction/high temp brake pads to match the high traction hooves. Man, we are so glad she sports Wilwood not so BBK. the same friction material for the stock brake pads cost 3x over for the Wilwood 7816. While the track season is still 2 months away I rather ready than too late.
