Dan, I guess you might have shared with Randy about the location of the unit, but if you can let us know, please do. I'm guessing that it doesn't mount in the stock location as I don't believe that it will fit there, unless one were to cut-away or make some modifications in that area. I'm thinking that you are considering a front mount location...

Also, is it possible that this might cool the oil too much? I recall reading such a concern expressed somewhere here... If too cool is an potential area of concern, then maybe some type of thermostat and bypass might be necessary.

I've been waiting for an oil cooler solution!

It is going to mount to the lower portion of the radiator, and will stick out approx 1.5". There are options to allow you to add a temp guage.

Thanks
Dan

Update -

No we didn't forget about this product.

We have had to source some diffrent options regarding hose etc. We ran into some space issues, and have gone with a braided hose. We hope that the price can be kept at the same level. We should be doing some dev work this weekend, and some testing in the near future. We hope to have the final release in time for the holidays for all you gift giving mini owners!

Thanks
Dan

Dan, thank you for the update. Are you aiming to achieve a certain or desirable oil temp? I'm sure that there must be an ideal or optinum, and that while cooler is better, too cool would not be good...

We are aiming to be a bit more efficient then the stock cooler, especially on the track, where there is going to be great flow across the cooler. The other effect will be that the Engine coolant will not be heated as much because it will not be working double and cooling the engine oil as well as the engine.

While you are testing the system, could you check the oil pressure(at idle and at WOT) pre and post installation?

Thanks.

barbed fittings

I put 100,000 miles on an aftermarket oil cooler (on a Pinto) that used barbed fittings. When I went to remove it from the car I was selling, I had to cut the hoses as there was no way they were comming off.

The aluminum oil cooler fatigued and cracked after a couple of years. I used a piece of copper pipe with aluminum fins that I took out of an airconditioner and it lasted the rest of the cars life.

The adaptor plate had a bypass thermostat in it to prevent overcooling the oil in the winter. You want the oil up over 212 F to boil out the water.

The oil cooler on my MG Midget used rubber hoses and swedged fittings, and never had any issues.

I saw a classic Mini that used Braid covered hoses at the track get leaky. The braid covering masked the leak until it got serious, and made it difficult to find the leak.

Jdewey, I think those are good points. Without a bypass, or something comparable, I would be concerned about the oil being too cool, or not being able to get up to ideal temps (I guess 212+ F as a minimum). Let's see what Dan comes-up with...

Already in the Filter housing, there is a built in bypass that is variable to temperature. But I will see how it goes from testing and temperature to see if something else is required.

Have had to make some changes that set me back a bit. I'd rather hold off, then have issues.

It is going through a re-design to make it even better. It will be a little while though. But will Differ from anything out there.

Will have it done as soon as possible, ordering some new connectors and items tonight, and will go from their.

Will your cooler still have the blanking plate? Where will you be sourcing the oil from, and where will it return?

I am asking because I had installed a T in the OEM pressure sending location - for another purpose. But the damn oil pressure light nearly drove me crazy always blinking on. Pressure in the T was lower than what the sensor would accept as normal (at idle and during some hard accelleration). Made me Paranoid!

If you don't want to answer here (or at all) cool... but I'd like to know. PM?

that's a nasty place to see low oil pressure; right at the gallery and under acceleration. what was hooked up to that Tee?

Maybe should be a new thread, but wanted to know more about these products. do you use one? I know you track your car. Mini is not listed. Is it the same spin-on as the one listed for BMW? Advantages? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks, jlm.
