Exedy single mass flywheel conversion kit for r53

PREFACE: Despite several searches I couldn't find any solid info about the kit offered from Exedy. I'm hoping this thread will help others in the future. I own a 2004 MCS with the Getrag 6speed (original clutch AFAIK)

After having my mini (purchased with 151k miles in 4/16), I installed a 15% underdrive pulley in early November, car has 156k now.

Two weeks later, I let my 16y/o son do some in-town running around. Low and behold on Monday morning on my way to work, I notice slipping in 3rd gear and higher.

After the aforementioned search, I ended up deciding to try the kit from Exedy (part # BMK1001FW) from Rockauto for $335. The kit includes the single mass flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, alignment tool, input shafts lube, a new throw out bearing, and the new hardware.

Installation instructions are included but didn't have the torque specs. The only other negative to the entire set was the dowels were slightly mis-sized and had to be sanded down a bit to fit into the flywheel.

The flywheel is definitely lighter. Scales showed the factory dual mass at 26.34lbs. The new Exedy single mass tipped the scales at 19.15lbs. This difference can most assuredly be felt in the butt dyno.

I haven't noticed any drawbacks to the set up so far. I have put about 300miles on it, driving normally after giving a ~50mi easy driving shakedown (I know some may say it needs more but this was a decision made after a chat with my dad who is an ASE master tech in VWs). There is no noticeable extra noise from this set-up and the pedal feels great.

As of now, my car only has the underdrive pulley and honeycomb airbox mod so it's not like it's pushing a ton of extra power.

I intend to occasionally update this thread with mileage and hopefully no negative reports.

Ok I see it now. For some reason when you keyword search nothing comes up.

Yea we have it below the south bend, forgot they share the same part numbers in the beginning of the part.

Yes and I see that your listing is for "HD", the Heavy Duty version. Which gives a higher torque handling than what I have.

Yea, the OEM version should be on there also. Thanks for the in-depth review of the clutch. Like to hear how it's doing with many miles on it.

I was just looking at this kit wondering how it compares to the Valeo. Hopefully everything keeps going well. I will be getting one of them in the ear future and this might be the decision maker.

Any reason why you went with the Exedy kit instead of the Valeo SMF kit? I'm going to be replacing clutch to SMF soon and I guess these are the 2 choices.

Yup, for a DD, with less than 250whp, stick with the Valeo, they've been well tested and make an excellent OEM replacement option.

Any legitimate reason to doubt the Exedy as a valid replacement or is it just the lack of experience with them? I have no issue spending the $50ish extra for the Valeo but considering Exedy's reputation I don't see any reason for discrediting them without reason.

This is a genuine question for the more experienced members around here. I know the context in which questions are being asked can be lost in text sometimes so I just want to make that clear.

I chose the Exedy strictly based on price. I'm "cheap by necessity" aka poor race dad. I do the work myself and knew the Exedy was offered but not a ton of information on their use...someone had to be the first to give some feedback.

I'm a firm believer that you don't always have to pay a premium to get a quality product so I don't think you made a bad decision at all. The best bang for your buck as far as performance and reliability goes is what most are looking for I think. Im just curious to see if anyone has any negative feedback concerning the Exedy kit or if it's just a case of buy the more expensive one because that's what the majority do.

So far I like my Exedy Hyper, just don't have any experience with the stock replacement.
The only reason i mentioned the Valeo over the Exedy was that I thought the Valeo was actually cheaper, not the other way around.

BlwnAway the cheapest I've found is around $370ish and the exedy is around $320 on rock auto so that's what I was going off of. It seems to be a case of which ever one you can find the better deal on at the time for now. I'm definitely interested as well to where you found it for that price if you're willing to share the info.

On a side now R6 how is the clutch feel compared to stock?

I know it's been a few months, any updates on how the exedy clutch is holding up? Does anyone have any measurements of the disc or surface area for it? My clutch has finally let go and I'm looking for options, but right now I really can't afford the $800+ performance options for my turbo converted r53. A friend of mine mentioned installing the Valeo kit and just having the pressure plate re-sprung for a higher tension rate, I may look into that too. Either way I need a solid flywheel, my factory DM is starting to knock around so bad that my knock sensor picks up the noise.

I recently seen it on Amazon for about that amount. Google search is your friend.
