Wife said she went to downshift to 2nd and heard a grinding sound after which she was unable to shift into any gear.
This is a Luk clutch that was installed around 80k ago. Has anyone else had this happen? Also looks like the throw out bearing came apart (did not replace with clutch).
You did a clutch and did not replace the throwout bearing? Ouch....they often fail BEFORE the clutch wears out....don't think I have ever seen anybody say not to replace it...the mini unit is pretty junky....
Honestly haven't looked at many clutch failure pics....so not sure what is common.....
Crazy to not put a new throw out bearing on. Half the thing is plastic and it's not very expensive.
Sounds like all you did was put a new clutch disk in and didn't change anything else. If that's true, I would be very happy getting 80k miles out of it.
TO Bearing not withstanding, That's not normal. I've been working on cars for over 40 years and NEVER seen a disc spline sheared out. What kind of performance mods do you have on the engine? I'd send pictures to LUK and see what they'll do, (Probably say it was owner abuse) just to let them know that they may have a quality issue.
That's strange....that clutch hub must have been made out of some really soft steel.....and/or had a really bad fit between the splines on the transmission shaft and let the clutch rock around a lot and wear off the splines....
Ouch. Usually the Luk clutch kit, ours at least, comes with a new throw out bearing. It's always a good idea to replace all those components when in there for the clutch job.
