Parts bin engineering?

While waiting for the striping guy to finish striping my car this afternoon I got involved in one of those unavoidable conversations that driving a MINI create. Guy asked me how much of the MINI engine was the same as the Neon. Told him what I've read here: that it's in large part the Yurrpeen Neon engine. Which led to the question that brings me here. If the current MINI engine is mostly the same as the Yurrpeen Neon engine, will the US 2 liter Neon engine fit in the MINI? And if that will, why not the sooper dooper holy crap SRT4 engine? And if not, why can't we gain some cubic displacement and some useful bottom end torque by either boring or stroking the 1600 engine out to 2000 via part bin engineering.

If this has been talked to death, just point me in the right direction to find it. I failed to find anything definitive, but it might have been my search criteria that were wonky.

So, anybody know?
