This was done in California with 91 octane. So the "east coast" version should be better.

oh oh, make your software mac compatible! or i'll have to run virtual pc, and that is just no fun at all.

also, what is giac's or helix's thoughts on the mth tuning's software, and if you have checked it out, how does this software compare to franz's program? franz's program + cable + shipping = about $200 total.

i seem to remember andy testing it and saying he got no real changes, but lately people have been saying it gives good results. plus franz updates for free (ie, as you add mods and etc).

it's looking like if franz's flash gets more popular, people are going to flock to the giac and franz's.

also, i think dinan's software upgrade is $300.

Don't you know? All the good software worth having is for PC only.

Will this chip be further tunable at a GIAC center? It sounds like a lot of GIAC chips can be done this way. There seems to be different levels of chip tuning.

Also can you clarify the 3-9hp. Was this at different rev ranges or peak hp on different cars?
DGZ:

Understanding how Garrett operates requires some explanation, and a caveat. He is involved in so many projects simultaneously that there is, as of yet, some gray area regarding what will be available in the future. Garrett is first and foremost a technical junkie. If a project interests him, he will pursue it. That's in part why he, a dyed-in-the-wool VW guy had the R32 chip available immediately, versus a long wait for the MINI (a big E.C. article can't hurt either). I have seen him give 10 hours of free dyno time to tune a car perfectly, just because the challenge was there. If you go to another GIAC dyno shop, they may be less generous with the dyno time, but if they are sending datalogs to Garrett, he'll tune them. If you are anywhere near Philly we have a pretty good system of dynos, datalogs, and virtual tuning via email to California. Feel free to give me a ding if you have unusual mods that would benefit from special timing/fuelling maps and we'll figure out how to get your car dialed in.

We've seen as many as 9 peak HP on some cars, and as few as 3 on others. Remember, when doing dyno runs correctly, you collect multiple data, remove the extreme results, and check for repeatability. I'll try to get some of Garrett's dyno charts today, and we actually have an open afternoon tomorrow. If it stays that way, I'll strap my car on the dyno and do some runs. No promises but there will be charts soon.

I'm still waiting for a chip company to truly impress me and allow me the capability to alter all those standard car settings like "Auto-Unlock doors when key is turned to off position".

Well uh, good luck with that. You probably aren't looking for a performance tuning company to do your ECU though.

If you have ever met Eric, visited Helix, followed his participation in NAM or just had him fly 6,000 miles for a pulley party you will know that nobody's dyno has seen as many Mini's and his numbers are to be believed (unlike most of the other claims out there). They're good enough for me.

Besides, who cares about peak hp? Let's see torque@x,xxxrpm. Let's see some graphs.

SHOW ME THE BURBON......I mean...the numbers!

Eric,

Back to the GIAC tuning shops. Do they have to send the datalogs back to Garret, or do they have the tools to further tune the chip? I have heard some shops have done it for the VW chips, but I may be way off.

I think that Garrett is the one that does the actual tuning, although I have seen Todd at AWE looking at the code. Garrett is the one that really understands it.

Thanks for the response. Well the release of this chip is really anticlimactic. I would have thought more response. The Unichip generated so much comments with such a high price tag. This is the cheapest chip on the market, so I thought it would have done better.

The response is pretty good here.

Okay, I did some runs: first five runs with stock version 36 software, then five with the chipped software, and then five back to stock. Here are two comparson reports. The first from stock to chipped, the second from chipped back to stock. The car stayed on the dyno while it was getting re-flashed, and all of the start and peak temperatures were within five degrees (usually better-we have good fans). We didn't wide-band O2 for this test.

The graphs look good. What mods did you have on your car? Anythoughts on why the hp is pretty low? The torque looks great though. Actually the numbers look pretty good overall, especially on your conservative dyno.

This chip looks very attractive. Is there a time frame on the 19% pulley chip upgrade? I am really leaning toward this option.

So for all the grief I have given you, can I make it up, by spending a lot of money with your shop?

Great torque gains!

Really nice torque improvement from 2000 to around 5200 RPMs. I don't think the other ECUs will be able to touch that. Way to go...and for the price - the only way to go!

Once this USB version comes out, I'll be going with the GIAC.

Any time frame on that?

The power mods on this car are RDR intake, 63 mm TB, plug wires (for what that's worth), 15% pulley, Borla Sport. We kept the mods limited to what is common on these cars.

I talked to Garrett today, and he set the conservative release date at 4-5 weeks for the smart cables, although it could be sooner.
