This was true some years ago, but the foam/oil/cleaner used now a days is formulated to act together.

Please pardon my denseness on this Mid week morning, but this goes against all the stories I've heard about CARB certification. So the fact I've got an intake (Moss MINI) that doesn't have a CARB number, won't necessarily cause an automatic failure?

I've heard there is a visual inspection that looks for this?

I guess if all else fails, I should just bring my MINI to you when I need smog?

This is from the California Smog Check Inspection Manual

ALTA Filter hint

About a year ago I posted a quick fix for this ALTA problem. Can't seem to find it in the archives, so here it is new.

The entire weight of the ALTA filter is carried by the rubber clamped to the intake tube. Since the rubber can get some oil on it, a possible failure mode is to hit a bump and have the filter lip off -- I know because it happened to me!

My fix was to take a ~22" piece of black #12 house wiring wire and bend it like this:
The hoop is about 6" in diameter and can be formed aroud a tin can or Quaker's Oatmeal box. Note that the hoop is slightly off center.

Take this noose and use it to cradle to filter element. Fold the ends around the firewall end of the box:

It's been in place over a year and has never failed me.

Regards, Tom

I used your ideal (saw your original post) but, used a long nylon tie instead of wire. Just bent over top of metal enclosure and used rubber seal to hold it. Works great and won't rust

wow.. never thought i'd thought of somethin like that!

i basically cut the original circular piece out and re-fit a new piece and spot welded the dam thing together and just spray paint the thing again

hasn't failed yet!
