JMTC 45 turbo- pre-inspection

I bought the 45 billet polished from JMTC. After inspecting the turbo I'm not sure it has been "ported" . I see casting marks every where I look inside. The outlet has what looks like a flake of aluminum that I could knock off with little effort. I had to send back my "port matched" manifold due to it not being port matched after I made a templet to check.
Well I contacted a guy in vegas to see if he could inspect the turbo. He said he could spin it up and check for vibrations and then open it up. He asked about the bearing and I told him it had the "360" bearing upgrade. He said the Chinese turbos don't last.
One of my oversights was that I thought JMTC Cooper was associated with JM Turbo. If I had known these where Chinese turbo's I might have looked around a bit more. I'm not knocking JMTC by any means I'm just asking. I know there are people running around with good milage on these turbos.
I guess my question is the guy at the turbo shop was saying he could put in a garret bearing, balance and check the turbo out. Has anyone had to deal with vibrations or anything with the JMTC turbo. I'm also wondering about the "port" work as well.

There's no harm in getting it re-balanced. But don't let them talk you into Garrett parts of any kind. That sounds impractical.

Thanks for the comment Doug. I was thinking if it lost the bearing and damaged the housing that might be a nice fix, but wasn't sure I would do it right off the bat. Thanks again

I though JMTC was JM turbo.., No?
I have had issue with a couple of JMTC products and would be wary.
I resisted starting a thread to this effect but the guy Arric is in complete denial about certain issues he has with his products. I would love to hear about a third party checking his turbo. My wastegate fell off after 5 k miles or so.
Please chime in if you have had issues. I know of 2 other customers who have.

I have had great success with my 47 K04 ported JMTC billet turbo. I did adjust the wastegate, to my cars unique set up (took 5 minutes). I did ceramic coat the exhaust side and polished the compressor side. I have been driving with it for 7k and I make about 25whp more at 4500rpm than my JCW turbo, and about 60whp more at 6100rpm. mQubed Motorsport, Manic Tuning Dealer

I have experience of two years driving around the year, even in harsh, freezing winter conditions, with "fully setup"(remap, downpipe, intake mods.,etc.) , short daily trips, long distance driving without anykind problems on my JMTC made S42HP.I believe that if the JMTC turbos would be in serious trouble, it should be immediately apparent in this forum. If the products have problems, it should fairly and honestly bring them to the public, the benefit of all this in the forum readers. The individual components(wastegate, divert etc.) can, of course, break down, but hardly JMTC made this parts... And, If you have paid for the porting, and it has not been done I would take a straight immediately contact the JMTC for ask the matter. My porting job was done well and I was happy with it. And the Chinese, I do not know, maybe a good thing to bring public, certainly can affect the decision to purchase a product...

I don't know about my port work yet due to the fact I'm not home to take it apart, but from looking at it the best I can last time I was home I don't see any "massaging" , "polishing" etc ... Not to say that it has or hasn't been done..... but from my thinking of how it "should" be done I don't see it.
I'm not trying to talk bad about the Chinese turbos or JMTC , I'm was just trying to see if anyone had done a pre-check or just plug and play. I can see the wastegate might need adjusting ( seams like they might tell you that ).
I paid for the coating as well and didn't get it..!! So after I get it inspected I will contact them on the coating and anything I find.
I'm looking forward to feeling the difference between the stock and the JMTC45.
I have about 3 weeks left on this job and then I'm off for a month... Manic here I come

JMTC vs Chinese

Interestingly enough both my Chinese made turbo and the JMTC suffered the same failure; waste gate door came of the lever. The JMTC did last approx. 3k miles longer though. With JMTC I had a couple of bad experiences with his product; turbo and DP. He tried to baffle me with BS but after I explained I have 35 years experience in this biz he shut real quick like.

Do you happen to have specs for the GP turbo like Tigger2011 shared for the turbos listed in his build thread?

The John Cooper Works turbo uses the same compressor wheel as found in the Volkswagen/Audi Mk5 and B7 series cars with FSI engines. It is a BorgWarner 2080 spec wheel. Here is its compressor map:

He did not say. I informed him that I was looking for a JCW or GP Turbo to upgrade. He asked why not a K04, I informed him of my concerns. He seemed to think it was more attributed to user error, rather than mechanical... I shall stay tuned...

I do think that some of the issues people had with the 47mm k04 were user/install error. I do want to try a bigger k03 turbo first that is why I went with the JCW but I was actually asking do you know who's MINI G3 is installing the forged internals on?

I think if the wastegates are adjusted properly, there would be less issues with upgraded turbos. I opted for the JCW due to it being plug and play.

Jmtc - avoid

I know this is an older thread, wish I came across it earlier before going with JMTC for my turbo "upgrade" asI can see a lot of other people had similar experiences to me. The super K03 I bought from them through MiniMania failed REALLY quickly, and quite catastrophically. Followed all recommendations, new high flow cat, 2.5" exhaust, new oil lines. When I tried to return it for warranty repair after 3 garages concluded the turbo was crappy and the internals had crapped themselves, Arric from JMTC still refused to accept this. In the end he got out of me a working stock turbo from me as core return, the money for my initial super k03 turbo, and more money for the replacement K03 turbo - which I was expecting to be fully refunded, but the later refused to accept it was a failure on his part and did not provide the refund! Out of courtesy MiniMania refunded me a couple of hundred bucks for my troubles, but that was it.
