It's pretty easy to get to the air filter. I took the air dam off the supercharger so for easier access when lifting the airfilter cover, in all 6 torx bolts. T25 & T30 i think.

But I'll do that in the Photos....

Yeah! Awesome; can't wait for mine. I spent some MINI time over the weekend getting it all shined up. Now, I have an oil change and a filter install to do...just need ajusa to come through...

Pebble, what day did you order the filter? I ordered mine on 4/10, so I probably have a ways to go...

Looking forward to the Howto!

April the first. (I kid you not!). So two weeks to the day.

It took about a week 5 working days, for K&N to send it out and a week for UPS to deliver.
Once it is sent out you will get a dilivery date from UPS, keep an eye on your email for an update letter from AJUSA.

I ordered my K&N from ajusa on 4/11 and have not heard anything from them other than the order confirmation email on 4/11. I can wait two weeks for free shipping.

I'm looking at getting a K&N panel filter for my Idna Blue 2003 Mini S with black and blue insides / sportspkg.
Will I put a cone filter kit on my 88E30 M3 and removed a few years later as the engine heat made it lose hp and BMW came out with a evo 2 air box that worked, so good in fact that racer used it with a carbon panel filter, I'v seen the same brand of carbon filters on raceing Porsches.
Is there a carbon panel filter for the Cooper S ?
Or do the carbon filters just not last for a road car?
For now a K&N panel in the stock box where cool air via a tube is feed from the top of the grill to the box looks like the best bet.

I know there are a lot of K&N fans out there, but I really like some of the other products out there. I have a panel filter from BMC (the 24 hour of Le Mans winner in 200, 2001, 2002 and the F1 World Champion 200, 2001, 2002) for the S and the Cooper, and I also have Green Filter UK panel filters (the FIA WRC champions for the last few years). I prefer both of these to the K&N, and they are comparably priced.

Just thought I'd throw that out there (and I have access to all 3 makes, wiht the same margins, so this is really just what I think the best stuff out there is).

I just installed a panel Filter from Green filter.. Very nice element.. and flows really well.. I'm using it while I compete in Stock class for SCCA this year.. after that I will be using the Pilo Racing filter which uses a Green Filter Cone filter.. Very High Quality..

Dang it! Curse my lack of research! I got the K&N simply because of its reputation and name presence. I didn't really know about the others. I guess we'll see when it finally arrives from ajusa.

Pebble, how are you liking it so far? Nice howto, btw. Looks like you've got some competition, Randy!

BTW- Randy, when will you be in the Washington area to supe up all our MINIs? Daddy needs 200+ hp. We're waiting for you, cash in hand...

Randy, with these new filters coming out, does that mean the madness isn't the best anymore?

Definatly more power, but remember it was replacing a 8000Mile used filter.
I remember when I had my air filter replaced by MINI because it smelled like the Swamp Thing and my ECU reprogrammed for the surging acceleration problem, my MCS had so much more power. Over time, though, the car seemed to return to its former, slower, self. I suspect that a dirtied-up filter has a lot to do with this loss in power. Needless to say, once I replace it with the K&N, I should notice quite a change though it might not last.

Oh, well, at least I can clean it myself before racing anyone
Just got my "your item has shipped email", ready for friday delivery!

K&N is a good filter, just as good as the others Randy listed. I put drop-in K&N filters in both my motorcycles and my truck and I have noticed slight gains. I think I will end up going with the K&N typhoon intake for my MCS just because I want more air than just a drop-in filter. If I wasn't going to do this I would definately go with a K&N drop-in filter.

Also when you say Washington, do you mean the state or D.C.? If you're in D.C. check out Helix, they are in Philadelphia, PA and are very knowledgeable about our MINIs. I had them do a pulley install last Friday and I was really happy with their work. Of course if you're out in Washington state, you probably want to take a road trip to see Randy.

weaverpsu,

It's really apples to oranges. The Madness is an intake, and these are drop-in filter element replacements.

I truly believe that the BMC and Green are both better elements than the K&N (and I carry the K&N too!).

Beautiful write up BTW!

Washington, hmm - I'm doing Fl, Socal, and now Dallas, so I don't think I could make it up there before September!

I agree that Helix is a great option in the NE.

Randy

Heh, sorry for being ambiguous; it's DC. When you live here, it's the only Washington that anyone refers to .

Helix, eh? I think I may have to throw some business their way, after I squeeze every bit of warranty goodness out of MINI. Thanks for the tip!

Well, at long last, today's the day for the filter install. It's sitting at home, waiting to become my official FIRST MCS MOD!! Of course, with HP gains of about nothing to nothing, it's not much to brag about.

Install update - Pebble, you rock, the filter was in, only took 5 minutes to do. As advertised, improve sound/acceleration. Not a bad gain for $35.

Hey, whatever makes the commute more fun, right?

I just poped my K&N in and got a very similar experience! The DSC kicked on 1-3rd gears! Nice and EASY mod. This will hold me over until I get the cold air intake....

Hi Randy,
what are prices on BMC and Green Filter for MCS?
Can you get any of those for 1990 VW Corrado g60?

thanks, JCS
