What to look for in a used s/c

I know it's hardly ideal but due to funds and an s/c that literally had a sudden catastrophic failure yesterday I need to buy a second hand non-built unit. If I have the unit in hand what should I look for. The obvious is check oil levels. Is there any play in the shaft that's normal. What noise should it make if any when hand turned? I figure if I put in fresh oil I can buy myself some time. I do my own wrenching so it's the only cost. $650 seems to be the cheapest rebuild I can find.

TIA

TG

I'm not sure about play in the shaft, but if I bought a used supercharger, I'd look inside to make sure all the teeth on all shafts are good and no metal shavings inside. You would hate to install this and find out issues after everything is back together. Just my .02 cent.
