Turbo conversion?

Just pondering this one... I see M7 has a turbo kit for the regular MC. I also know how inefficient the Eaton is compared to a turbo. So why can't you convert an MCS to turbo? Swipe all of the accoutrements off of a regular MC, such as accessories, water pump, drive belt, etc... remove the supercharger and intercooler, replace with regular MC stuff. Then mount a turbo kit with a nice small fast spooling turbo. I figure with about 15-16 psi, larger injectors, SAFC and some dyno time, this setup would be much more powerful than any regular MCS.

Just something running through my head, as opposed to fighting with the loss of effiiciency the higher you boost the Eaton, tied in with overspinning the water pump. Anyone have any input or reason that this could not be done? Already read all the twin charged threads, and just wonder why no one has ditched the blower entirely.

I'm with you...then you can program your piggyback ECU to up the boost to anything your motor can handle

imho there would obviously be durability issues, but i think rather than dumping all that good factory hardware, i'd rather add on a turbo and moderately boost... 15-16 psi sounds like an awful lot (considering that the vw 1.8t's run at about 8-10... i think). plus, theoretically, you'd be spending less money on the install since you wont really have to replace anything, but only be adding.

did you read the big thread about the twincharged mini? i think they were talking about a 5-6k price tag. kicks the crap out of the jcw, i'd say.

MCS turbo in the works by Psi-Fi

It's gonna be fast.

Check it out-

Maybe if the Turbo MCS (250 to 350 HP) succeeds a Turbo MC will follow.
No idea on the price of this mayhem.

We will be beta testing a turbo for the MC hopefully sometime this summer.

As far as the VW/Audi 1.8T turbos, they are running about 12-14psi OEM (I believe)...but I have several friens busting upwards around 18-21psi with the K03/04 hybrid turbos and chips. The larger flow T28 turbo is better suited for higher pressures.

As for changing out the sc to a turbo only unit, that would be a great idea, you can possibly use the existing intercooler and some of the same plumbing to run the system...just figure out a way to connect the airflow through the exhaust and you have a done deal. The MCS engine is better suited for boosting with the compression ratio as compared to the MC. The MC has such a high compression ratio, that when boosting higher levels, that is not a good thing...ie, boosting more than 5-8psi at that compression ratio will more than likely cause damage. But the MCS engine is made like a turbo engine, able to handle the increased booste by having a lower compression ratio....so you should be good to go.

Considering the displacement and other stuff, and the increased boosting you can get out of a turbo, you are more likely to see larger gains in horse power from a turbo than a supercharger. It only takes a chip to boost the 1.8T VW/Audi motors up to 225hp....and that is without intake, exhaust, etc....

In my 2.7 twin turbo motor, I increased horse power from 250 to 307 and torque from 266 to 366 ft lbs with only a chip. slight upgrade in diverter valves to handle the pressure changes, and boost increased from a combined pressure of 14psi to 20psi (these numbers are from the chip manufacturer, not from any measurements I have made). There is a lot you can do with a turbo that you are limited with when using a supercharger, but the power bands are different, turbo is more peaked and the super charger is more smooth.

I say give it a go, and see if someone wants to do development on it, could be huge if you can simply do a change for around the $2500-$3000 mark for a kit and maybe include a T-28 turbo...maybe run around 220hp or so to start off with. My guess is that 300hp would be absolute max for a system like that, but that is a complete guess.

cheers
jon

If you closely read adendum 14a.3.55 to the MINI warrenty you may be suprised to learn that this is one of the few mods covered by the warenty.

I'm assuming you guys already know about Silver Sonic: http://www.promini.com/projectcar.shtml or http://www.promini.com/projectcar/SilverSonic.pdf

There are other Turboed MCSes out there, Its just been long enought I don't remember any of them... Plus the guys at BMP (Promini) are all top-notch guys.
