Drivetrain Embarked on the Joey Taillight mod.
Joey Mod - Tail light dechroming project w/ referencing photos
I took on the taillight dechroming mod, aka "Joey Mod" this afternoon. I've successfully done one light and will do the second one tomorrow. I'm currently waiting for the RTV to cure.
Popping the lens open wasn't as hard as I thought when I found a nice gap on the bottom of the light and went at it with a chisel as a pry. I almost did call the mod off when intially I couldn't see how I could safely crack the lens open without damaging it. I'm glad I persevered and kept trying to get it opened.
I used Gloozit as the sealant/adhesive to put the lens back together. That alone probably would do in properly sealing the lens from moisture penetration, but I coated another layer of rtv over the dried glue for assurance. I may be **** enough to wrap the seam with electrical tape after for the ultimate weather proofing.
Edit: I forgot to mention I used paint thinner to wipe the chrome paint off. That was the hardest part of the mod, consuming the most time. While some sections of the chrome paint just came right off from the touch of the thinner, there were some stubborn sections where the chrome just won't get off completely. I had to rub at it repeatedly and still couldn't get all of it off.

TIP: I found that dechroming the paint was way way easier with rubbing alcohol than with paint thinner (mineral spirit). It was effortless and I was able to finish the second light in 40 minutes
