Drivetrain Custom exhaust set up, opinions?
Custom exhaust set up, opinions?
So I love my exhaust tone. It's loud. Its annoying but it has a beautiful ring to it. BUT every now and then I have to tote my daughter around in my mini and not the family car so I kind of want to tone it down a hair without restricting it too much.
My current set up is a custom design. Megan racing header, catless into I believe a 24" magnaflow resonator, to some kind of Megan racing muffler which I'm convinced is blown out. This was the set up the previous owner had.
Now being catless and straight out (relocated battery) I know I won't tone it down too much, I just want to refine it a bit. So I was thinking of starting with a new muffler and maybe another reso, opinions?
I was looking at a magnaflow style muffler or perhaps flowmaster deltaflow series.. like the super 44s or 50 series? Looking for somewhat affordable. Just hoping to get some opinions or perhaps other catless set ups people are running. Thanks!

the supper 44 and 50 series are LOUD LOUD LOUD!
as with anything, sound is created by the expanding pressure wave breaking the sound barrier, so you need to give it room to bounce around and even out so the pressure wave drops below the audible range, or slows down enough.
we can still do it with minimal restriction though.
the resonators will give you a smoother sound usually (and better "tone") and the mufflers take out the noise.
I have had good luck combining the vibrant ultra-quiet resonators up close to the header ( right after)
and using magna flow straight-through mufflers (perforated tube).
The magna flow [if you get one that is offset in/out] (offset from each other, just so it is not a straight shot through the thing. it needs a kink)
Does a pretty good job at taking out a lot of the noise.
With a straight back system though you will still be hard pressed. May need to make a frequency-specific silencer for cruising speed still.
Oh, and to eliminate cabin drone, make sure you do not have any trumpet style tips at the end.
They increase velocity and help the exit, but will also make the exhaust louder.
everything is a trade off
I know some people have had good results with splitting the exhaust at the end of the tunnel and then just running two more ultraquiets in parallel where the battery box used to be... i would almost just say do this instead then

And just using a 2.5" to 3" transition after the resonators and leading into the muffler.

Thank you for the thorough response! I had trouble finding custom set ups vs just the generic cat backs. I like the idea you presented and vibrant offers quality mufflers.
So just to make sure I get what you are suggesting. Continue my straight back exhaust until the end of the tunnel then split off or Y off into two resonators (ultraquiets) then Y back into that vibrant muffler at the end?

im not sure what yours sounds like, but i love ethe sound of my magnaflow mufflers, the perforated tubes are really nice, since they are decently quiet at low flow speeds, but when you get on it, it leaves a nice tone out the back, both my bikes have these styles and so does the mini =)

No, the ultra-quiet resonator (single) will go just after the header IN the beginning of the tunnel. (think less than 10" from where the stock CAT used to be).
Straight pipe down the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel use the 2.5" to 3" transition to step up the pipe size and use the single in dual out muffler there! (where the bat box used to be).
The other option would be in place of the transition, but a split into the pipe at the end of the tunnel, and run two more ultraquiets in parallel in the exact same spot.
Will be louder, but have an ultra smooth and mellow tone to it. As to how loud I can not be exactly sure.
The magnaflow mufflers do sound great though!
this is my old setup. Verry nice around town and while I had a note on the highway, it was FAR from a drone.
It was cutout closed -> 3x vibrant resonators (in series) and a magnaflow perf. tube muffler.
cutout open 1x vibrant resonator and the magnaflow perf tube muffler
Both setups still left the tips (cutout bypassed a loop)
(i did have a small leak at the time of this video as well)
while I wish that would work, it will not fit.

I used 2.5" in/out ultraquiets.

you can buy them several places, but here is a link to them on summit racing as well.
