For those that have installed the short shift kits (the extension piece kit), have you noticed any problems with the lid of the housing being not there? How far out of the housing does it stick?

Just wondering why no vendor has offered a replacement lid, or even if it is needed. I'm the type of guy that likes things to be complete, and not having the lid on the housing means it's not complete.

Of course, not being able to get the linkage apart pretty well stopped me from completing the mod (along with finding out I have the 03 style on my 04).

The B&M SS Kit keeps the factory lid. And will fit on an 03

There was more dirt/dust/particulate matter inside my lid than outside. Maybe the lid is designed to keep stuff in.

2 months of SS and no problem without the housing cover. The heat shield protects the housing quite well from dirt, etc...

Remember, the key is to rotate the socket of the joint laterally and superiorlly until it disengaged from the ball of the shifter shaft. Use a flat head screw driver and find a point of leverage to rotate the ball-and-socket joint. DO NOT PULL!

Both Alta and B&M retain the housing cover. As for the other style that adds a link,
MINI Mania sells it with a cover.

Ok, a little homework goes a long way. Did not know that Alta and B&M kept the housing cover.

"... rotate the socket of the joint laterally and superiorlly..."

Wish I went to med school, cause then I wouldn't have to go to http://www.m-w.com to figure this out. I got the time to research some more while I wait for the part to get back from Helix.
