resonator or cat delete

first off I am sorry if this has been posted before. all the posts I have found on this are people talking about with aftermarket exhausts.

that being said, I am looking at either removing resonator, 2nd cat, or deleting them both. I am looking to hear more of the pop and burble while on sport mode, but do not want the exhaust to be that much louder than completely stock. I have seen videos online of resonator delete, 2nd cat delete, and both deleted. my question is to people that did this with stock exhaust is how much louder is it really than stock exhaust and what would you prefer i would do? the videos i have seen are all stationary so if anyone has videos of it driving that would be great!

oh yeah, and its a mcs '13

Any emissions testing in your state? If not, I would think that the cat is more restrictive than the resonator (just my opinion). The factory JCW exhaust had a resonator but no 2nd cat.
I would put the replacement pipe in with band clamps. That way if it is not loud enough, you can just get a longer piece of straight pipe and replace the resonator as well. Then you don't have to worry about welding the system until you are happy with it.

Have fun,
Mike

I live in PA so they do test for emissions but if the jcw only has a cat in the downpipe then it shouldn't matter right? Cause if I delete the resonator and the 2nd cat then It'll be just like the jcw exhaust without the resonator. I'm not looking to take out the cat in the dp

You're right. The last O2 sensor is in the downpipe right after the cat. Regarding if you'll have any problems, it depends on how strict the shop is that does your inspection. I live in Philly, and I believe most shops will just check to make sure there's no OBD-II codes or CEL. But I guess if you went somewhere that ran emissions tests at your tailpipe, then you run a small chance of failing. Pick a tuner-friendly shop and they'll treat you right.

I'll have to find one down here then! Thanks for the info, I didn't think it would matter that much since the jcw was set up that way

I took both out. It got louder and that is all I was looking for. I also picked up about 2mpg as a bonus for my time and $20 for of stuff.

I doubt you will be able to get more or louder pops and burble without the overall volume of the exhaust going up though.

How much louder would you say it is over stock? I know the tone will change, but would you say the volume increased a lot or just slightly? Thanks!

I just had my resonator and 2nd cat removed 1 week ago. It is not obnoxious. A guy I work with was driving behind me right after I got it done and he said it sounds like an old British sports car now.

Would you say it's noticeably louder than stock? I ended up getting only my resonator removed and I love the tone it produces now but can barely hear it driving with the windows down. I can really only hear it when I'm about 3rpm. I want it to get just a little bit louder, enough just to hear it driving around, but not to loud in the car

I deleted both, and I love it. Only loud on a cold start (kinda obnoxious) and when you're in the throttle. At a cruise it's almost silent in the cabin, even at highway speeds.
The tone is a little more raspy and it deffenitely pops and gargles more than the stock setup. It gives a loud POP often between the gears around 3k rpm which scares my neighbors and makes me laugh every time.
There is NO drone in the cabin.
I say go for the mod (because it's cheap and reversible) and see what you think.
Good luck!! and hope you like it!

I know you probably have heard tons of videos already, but I'll leave this here anyway. ;-)

That's with the primary cat removed though. I imagine with the stock downpipe it's going to be pretty quiet still. So I say remove them both!

P.S. Sorry for the crappy video. Maybe close your eyes...

It's funny how easy it is to get convinced on this forum😯. After hearing from what you guys have said, I'm gonna get it done and hopefully soon! Lol

DBmini726, just had a question, do you have a video of how it sounds? Just curious how much the tone changed while driving. Ive noticed a slight different from just the resonator deleted and i know it will change more. Not sure if you have a gopro or anything. Can you tell I'm excited to get it done

No I'm sorry I don't have a video. I looked at ALL the videos online and they can be misleading. Some exhausts sound LOUD and they're really not. Some sound really BOOMY but they're raspy.

Alright, that helps though! Basically all I wanted was it to be loud when accelerating hard and it seems like that's what your saying!

It's funny. I want the exact opposite of everyone here. I want more power and I want it to stay completely stock sounding, or as quiet as possible. Anyone got any recs for that?

I was thinking 2.5" catless or resonated DP with a cheap 2.5" catless / resonated TBE, something like the OBX or CNT. Any thoughts? (I know not the purpose of the OP, but this thread is full of noise-conscious fellas)

If you go catless that sucker will be considerably louder.
In my opinion, remove the resonator and see how you like that first.

Also, when you go catless, you move the power delivery around a bit....less low-end, more high-end. If you tune for it, you see gains across the board.
-just a heads up as that isn't mentioned too much on here

When you removed the resonator how did you secure the filler pipe at each end? Will the same clamp in the rear work up front? I'm looking at removing the resonator for starters then maybe the second cat depending on how it sounds.

Just go to a muffler shop, they cut mine out and welded in a filler piece for $40. I was in and out in 20 minutes. Make sure you take what they cut out in case you want to reinstall it. Now I also brought a piece of 304 stainless tube because most shops will want to put in aluminized steel which in my opinion is junk.

If you want to do it yourself you can use exhaust clamps on either end. It's really not much cheaper, maybe $20.

Some shops won't do the 2nd cat (it's actually illegal). Also I find that cash price is cheaper for a one man type shop. Just say.."how much I have cash". And they'll blurt out a price.

Do you remember the diam of the stainless? How long of a piece of SS? & $? I am thinking about doing this delete too. Thanks for the info in advance.

It was 2.25 OD, 16 gauge. For just the resonator maybe 18 inches, for the resonator and 2nd cat together maybe 30 inches.

Resonators reduce popping and mid tone sounds. Cats remove bass and high pitch sounds. I find a good high flowing cat, without a resonator and then a nice free flowing straight through muffler suitable for a non ricey sound. I've ran my mini straight pipe before it sounds great over 3500 rpm but until then it's like some poor kids sad honda.
