Whoa! The surface rust on the pulley doesn't look like a big deal - it isn't on the mating surfaces or the belt contact surface. But, that shredded belt! Looks like misalignment to me. FWIW, I have been running the NAPA 535 belt for about 7k now and it isn't shredded at all.

a guys, regarding that metallic chirping sound. My MCS has been doing that for awhile now. I take it out on the weekends so it sits in the garage all week so I thought that sound would just be from a slighlty rusty mating surface on the flywheel or clutch. Once I've engaged the clutch a couple of times, its gone. Wutcha guys think??? Mine has 40,000 miles now.

The rust was a PITA because it was also on the mating surfaces. Both taper to taper surface as well as some spots of hub to shaft. The pics don't show it, but it's there.
That belt had a little north of 9k miles.

Ah, I can see that better now. Was the belt shredded on the outer rib or the inner rib?

Outer. And I had measured the alignment several weeks ago...it was to MM's specs.

Why did your pulley rust? I had my 15% on for around 17k miles before I upgraded to the 19%. I still have the 15% lying around - it looks brand new!

Two more:

this one shows the abuse given to free it from the shaft...

The MiniMania pulley uses a two piece steel taper "hub" with an aluminum outer pulley. The steel rusted to itself, and to the shaft...as well as the surface rust.

Did you use the screws in the two extra holes as "poppers"?

Yes. But, the only thing that "popped" was the head of the allen bolt! As you can see, the outer steel hub is still attatched [fused] to the aluminum pulley. They never seperated. And they still won't .

some fatal errors in the design of that pulley:

the shiny tips of the vee's indicate they are bottoming out in the belt. If the vee is formed correctly, the belt will tend to wedge fit in the vee distributing the load over the full belt section.

dissimilar materials used as part of the compressive grip have different co-efficients of expansion. as the pulley heats up, the alu part will grow more than everthing else (like the bolts) and that will affect the grip of the taper and the ultimate fit of the unit.

there is not enough bore restriction to self align the pulley with respect to the shaft end. In particular, with a taper fit pulley, the axial movement when setting the grip needs to be controlled. Note how Bisch is able to digitize the hole without much restriction.

Bisch, you did replace it with a Helix 19% right? no worries then.
Just a little on/off topic.
I dug around looking for the Goodyear Gatorgrip belt. Here's what I found.
19% pulley Goodyear part# 4060537, part# 6PK1365, 6 rib effective Length
53.75", outside Length 54.5"
What do you think about using on my new Helix 17% pulley.

From what I understand, with the 15% pulley, a new belt is optional. With the 19%, the new belt is mandatory. With the 17%, I don't think it is absolutely necessary but it is recommended. And as far as I'm aware, the 17% and 19% would use the same belt as I BELIEVE the 19% belt is only 2 inches shorter than the stock belt.

Greatgro, from what I understand the OEM belt is 54.5" effective Length . Anyone have a NAPA replacement part number for the OEM belt. I'll find a cross reference and post.
Bisch mentioned these Goodyear belts and I wanted something better then that NAPA belt.
Check out thier ad http://www.goodyearbeltsandhose.com/cars/gatopoly.html

Goodyear part# 4060537, part# 6PK1365, 6 rib effective Length 53.75"/1365mm, outside Length 54.5"
GreatGro, 2" is a big difference, I got those part numbers from a vendor supplying Goodyear belt's to 19% users.
