I've seen one on a friend's Eclipse. It does work but has drawbacks. This is NOT simply an electric motor and a weak fan. This is a real SC and not the leafblower motors you see on E-bay.

Kinda pricey at 2000 bucks though.

When I was a kid I mounted an electric fan in a tin can and hooked it up to the intake on my minibike. We all thought it was supercharged. Didn't cost $2,000, but it was the coolest thing on the block.

Just for grins, I went to that website. Couldn't find MINI listed, so I thought I'd try one of my other cars (both VWs). The page came back with:
any 2.6L to 3.8L
I find this to be incredibly interesting since it doesn't match up with any displacement that VW offers. So, I thought I'd check another car, my brother's 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup. I couldn't find it exactly, but this was close:
any 2.6L to 3.8L
I'm convinced. RUN as far and as fast as you can from this product...

15,000 watts of electricity needed to drive this thing. That's FIFTEEN KILOWATTS here, people. Look closely and you will see not one, not two, but THREE starter-type motors driving this baby. Needless to say, this kind of power can not be delivered by a stock electrical system on ANY vehicle save for possibly an electric locomotive.

15 kilowatts.

In reading through the site, they actually seem to be fairly open about its limitations. While I'm not on boost all the time, I'd hate to be limited to 15 second bursts, then be out. And the batteries 'can' recharge in 'only' 20 minutes... All the costs of supercharging with the limited benefits of NOS.
Sounds like a drag strip only type mod.
But hey, if they've got satisfied customers...

(edited to add smileys)

i'd say take two of those three starter motors on that device, and mount one on each rear wheel, for a hybrid, 4WD MINI. Probably better use of those 15 kW (or 10 kW if you only use two of the three starters). Could actully cut your 0-60 time by a second or two

He said it's basically great for drag races, that's about it. It is pretty limited. The recharge time is a bummer and the battery size would be a limit for the Mini.

He should have spent 1000-1500 more and got a "real" TC/SC.

I'll try to post photos, but he lives in Milwaukee and I'm in Madison so nothing soon.

Like NOS, the ESC™ is designed for short burst use, drawing its current from an independent battery supply and quickly recharging off the alternator when you're finished. By installing a simple SDPT switch (not included), your alternator is safely bypassed while the ESC™ is running.

For maximum efficiency, install high CCA, ultra-lightweight batteries that allow for lightning-fast recharge. We strongly recommend Hawker/Odyssey racing batteries. These MIL-SPEC cells weigh only 13 LB each and hold 680 AMPs.

"Superior vibration resistance ODYSSEY® batteries are of military grade and have endured rigorous tests that demonstrate their overall ruggedness and exceptional tolerance of mechanical abuse." - Hawker Energy, http://www.odysseyfactory.com/ody_why.htm

A fully-charged Hawker/Odyssey battery set will yield several runs, and then recharges in minutes, depending on your setup. A standard automotive high-amp battery charger will recharge six completely drained Oddysey batteries in less than half an hour. A 200-watt alternator will recharge in about 2 minutes. The ESC-400 draws 1250 amps, so at 100 amps the recharge rate ratio is about 15:1. We do not recommend using a stock alternator. In addition to your vehicle's normal energy requirements, a standard 85-amp alternator simply is not capable of producing enough additional power to safely and efficiently recharge your ESC™ system.

Warning: Attempts to recharge off any alternator while the ESC™ is running will cause parasitic loss, overheating, and possible damage

I wonder how their profits are coming along.

For the same price, you could buy a TC/SC kit for your car, which has the benefit of running all of the time.
Or
For alot less, you could intall a nitrous set up that does the same thing for much less, at an extremely lower weight.

But this is all obvious to you guys, I hope!

^^^Hey Dan, I'm enjoying the Pilo intake!!^^^
