Honestly, the AP is the best HP for your dollar. If you plan on tuning more aggressively in the future, grab an FMIC then an AP.

Read, learn, study... Repeat. Make decisions about what you want. Change mind several times. Read, learn, study some more realizing that most cheap Chinese stuff on eBay is crap... Make more/different/final decisions. Spend money (supporting NAM vendors if possible). Be happier having made own decisions and choices and gaining in-depth knowledge of your MINI.

IMO, the first and best mods are handling mods. A good set of street-able coils, some wheels, maybe a larger sway, perhaps upgraded brakes if you feel you need them. There is an artificial limit on what we can do with speed (the posted speed limit), but the sky's the limit when it comes to improving the handling.

With that foundation in place, my next set of mods would be the "big three": An FMIC, an exhaust with DP ideally, and then a tune.

The third and final group would be the optional add-ons: A re-circ valve, boost tubes, an intake, OCC, and perhaps a meth kit, etc.

For power mods on an R56, I'd go:

1) Helix or Forge FMIC
2) Akrapovic turbo-back exhaust
3) Access Port tune

Drop in an Aquamist meth kit and you'd be golden.

+100. To the OP: what is your goal/vision for the car? Show or go? DD for street, DE/track? Last but not least, budget?

My goal is to make it as close as I can to a WRC car as possible, budget about $300-$600 a month

I would jump on a downpipe and tune. Not even the same car after those mods.

Melangell is right. If you do anything, please remember NOT to buy ANYTHING off of eBay.
A WRC car, huh? Well then you would need to upgrade your suspension with some coilovers and maybe a rear sway bar (research on brands). Tires are very important. For Power it's pretty much religious: FMIC, DP and tune (again, research brands).

Just to give you a heads up, Helix is having a group buy on their intercooler. It's $599 if we get below 20 people. If we get over 20 people it'll be $579 plus free shipping! Right now we're at 10 people and counting.

I say that because you need one and your price range is up to $600. You can put your deposit down for $75 now if you wanted to. The deadline is March 1st.

Are we talking looks or performance? Performance isn't really possible. WRC cars cost upwards of 750k. You could however make it look like a WRC mini if you wanted. But none of this is going to fit in your budget. I could include the few major things you would need if you really want to know.

Performance:
Custom head
Custom crank
Custom pistons

Dude, I feel ya! Not a big fan of, "I bought a MINI, tell me what to do". However, I've dropped 6k in parts so far (all my own decisions!) and haven't come anywhere close to your list. Kinda makes me feel like I've not done so well...

You also aren't trying to make a "want-to-be" WRC car.

True... I just want a bad-*** ****** MINI! I've finally opened The Dread Pirate's engine to the point where I'm ready for an NM tune. I'm kinda thinking that one day I'll be following your path.
