I just installed a pulley and noticed that there is a very small play in the shaft axially. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Carl

I just checked mine and it doesn't seem to budge at all by hand. Of course, there is a belt holding it in place and a waterpump at the other end that may be causing "stiction".

I know that a turbo with any play in the shaft is BAD. I would assume the same for a supercharger, anything rotating at that kind of speed would not dig play IMHO.

What I observed was that the shaft moved very slightly in and out when the belt was not on. With the belt on, there is no play at all.

Just wondering because I had to pull the new Alta pulley off because I used the incorrect directions from Mini Mania that I pulled off the Alta site. I should have just read the instructions that came with the kit from Alta which is so simple I was kicking myself.

Thanks,
Carl

oops! Following directions are critical, especially with a component that spins over 14,000RPM! To add salt to the wound, you just missed out on a Pulley Party in Ohio that Randy hosted, could've had it done by The Master himself ops:

How did you remove the original pulley? I hope you used a correctly designed pulley remover for the MCS.

I have a spare supercharger sitting on my workbench, with the pulley off already, there is no play either in and out or side to side. I have had it apart, and the bearings and gears are very smooth and tight when fitted together, so any slop you feel would be a bad thing.

Removed with a crow foot puller with a mini mania pulley adapter. My friend who deals with superchargers said that the play I saw was normal. It was the gears in the SC that give it that little play. It does not move at all when the belt is on. I do not hear any weird noises to speak of. I was just making an observation. As for the install, it was not that difficult. The hardest part was assembling the tensioner bracket to the block.

2cool,
How much for the SC?

Carl

Heh... the spare is my porting experiment, scheduled to go on the car soon as I feel like ripping the nose off. Then the stock one will be a backup in case the infamous "19% pulley'll melt your blower" occurs...
