Randy Webb @ http://www.webbmotorsports.com told me that he can sell just the hose, but for some reason Alta charges about $30 more if you buy the hose separately vs. if you buy it with the intake. I *think* he said the hose by itself was $95.

I was quoted $99.00 for just the hose. But if you buy the whole intake without the hose it is $60.00 less. Seem's like a kind of a RIP to me per ALTA. Since I don't need one right away I'll wait and see if someone else starts making one for less.
I have checked out my friends ALTA and it is a nice piece of work.

>>WOW Andy! Didn't know that you were into R & D

Price is $94.68
Labor is $90 per hour. 4 minutes to make it and 55 minutes for the rubber cement to dry, then 1 minute to install it. Then spray paint it to the color of your choice.

I've ordered the Pilo intake, but I've been passively looking for a way to make a hose comparable to Alta's.

Has this been done before? Will the ace bandage & rubber cement hold up to the heat/element exposure of the engine bay?

The rubber cement will make you dizzy if you sniff enough of it, and the ace bandage is there to wrap your twisted ankle or wrist when you pass out!

Okay, it's not rubber cement and ace bandage, but it's some lightly reinforced (nylon strands?) rubber (silicone?). Check with Samco and knock-offs to find an elbow that may fit. They make taps to install the breather hose.

Yes, the $99 when by itself, or $60-ish when purchased with the airbox is slightly crazy. I think they did it becuase they were having problems getting and keeping the hoses in stock so they raised the price of the hose by itself. It is a nice part though, just expensive to manufacture in short runs.

The best price I've seen is $90 for the hose at JSC Speed.

Probably not. But after looking at one they appear to be hand made in a similar fashion as you can see the wraps of fabric. It maybe possible using silicon sealant and a synthetic fabric but removing the form core after wrapping it has me stumped unless Styrofoam is used and then dissolved. Anyone with any experience in this type of fabrication, please comment. Samco could make these for sure.

Question to all

I have the MINI Mania intake with the Madness back panel by cowel.

Does the intake hose make a big difference when air flow is concerned? What I mean is "smooth" air flow. I have the stock intake hose and I am sure the flow is "turbulant" but I am not sure.

Randy Webb told me that the Alta hose doesn't provide any benefit unless you have the larger throttle body. So unless you have, or plan to get a larger TB, I wouldn't spend the extra $$$ I have the Alta w/o the hose and am very happy with the added performance.

I do have the larger TB, so maybe there may be a slight advantage to having the hose.

Thanks

apexer,

Did Randy give you any numbers to back up that statement?

Randy has written that he ran back to back Dyno tests, stock hose + Alta intake against Alta hose + Alta intake, no change in numbers. Zero gain in a car with stock throttle body.

I respect your opion. Do you feel there would be any advantage in the install of the Alta hose over stock hose. I do have the large Madness TB?

Thanks

I haven't done any testing myself of just the Alta hose. It should be pretty easy to test though, I can record the pressure just downstream of the throttle body. Swapping my Alta hose for the stock one can be done in a few minutes. I'll put that on my To-Do list.

Thanks, I did not mean to put you in the "lab" for testing. I was just wondering what you thoughts were. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what you find.

The hose is not that much so I may just do it and get my car on the dyno pre and post. If I go this route, I will let you know and report the findings.

Thanks and thanks for posting my Dyno sheet some time ago (I faxed it to you if you recall

Here's something interesting about the Alta hose. This diagram shows how the stock hose has a recessed area around the throttle body so that the air flows smoothly from the hose to the throttle body barrel. The Alta intake has no such recess though, so the air hits a lip that measures about 4 mm over the entire circumference of the throttle body. By my rough calculations, that's over 1 square inch of vertical wall that the air is encountering on the way in. I'd be interested in designs that incorporate a lip in the hose, as shown in the "concept" below:

I always wondered about that when studying hydrolics. Going from a wider source to a narrow one increases pressure, but there was never any calc for surface drag or lip turbulance - that never made sense to me. I was always told that it was a negligable effect. You would have to prove quite a performance gain to get the manufacturers to change their molds and tooling anyway. But I bet a new competitor would have a pretty good marketing advantage because it makes more sense..
