Clutch Replacement Tips?

My clutch went out on my 07 at 38k miles, and i'm out of warranty. I'm thinking the previous owner burned up the clutch, I got the car at 14k miles and instantly it still mis shifted and also grinded gears on a regular basis.

I'm thinking about replacing it myself, with the help of my Dad, and I think i'm going with the SPEC stage 2+ clutch.

I'm open to any opinions. If you have installed a clutch on your mini yourself, feel free to leave any tips or clutches you recommend. The Giken clutch is already off the list, i'm not willing to pay $1,800 on a new clutch.

Thanks, Dan

From what I've heard it's hit or miss with Spec. It doesn't even look like their kit has a flywheel included. It's my understanding resurfacing of the stock dual-mass flywheel is not recommended. I would give Way or Detroit Tuned a call about this. It'll be no fun if you need to remove your whole transmission again because you took a gamble.

Hi Dan. I put the OS clutch in my 09. Works great. Though it can be difficult to drive in the city because of how it engages.

I am in the same boat but only changing because I have done 56k miles in a 2006 September build and thinking of fitting and LSD. Labour becomes free if you do the clutch at same time as you already have everything apart to do it.

After lots of research I found Competition Clutch and Spec to be the main offerings for our cars if used with a lightweight flywheel. Heard of issues with Competition Clutch and their flywheels here in the UK. And if you google you find hit and miss reports on the Spec.

As with everything depends on what you want to do with the car. Time Attack drivers may like one thing and daily drivers another. That is why you have to be careful with internet advice and opinions as others may come from a different interest and what may be good for them may not be good for you.

After reading good reports on KAV Motorsport clutches here in Europe from users who have sent their old clutch plates there to be resurfaced (R53 users with 260bhp at flywheel) this is the route I am going with a new Dual Mass Flywheel.

So hopefully that will give me clutch to handle mods and still feel like standard for a daily driver.

I'm thinking about going with the OS Giken STR model. I'm not willing to resurface the flywheel, also putting a stock flywheel with an aftermarket clutch. The OS Giken model seems promising, but it comes with a price. Planning on doing the installation ourselves. Any ideas?

Does anyone know if you can resurface the 09 R55 flywheel? I'm trying to save some clams.

FWIW, my stock OEM clutch lasted 153,000 miles. My Spec Stage 2 lasted 15,000.
Just sayin'.......

Jim,
Did your driving habits change with the SPEC clutch? I'm getting a bit worried, as the dealer quoted me $2600 for a clutch replacement. My car has 42,000 miles. I can't believe these clutches don't last longer!!

I've never had a car that had a clutch go out so fast!!
