Is anybody else having the same problem getting the Alta Can itself fitted to the frame ground.. Mine won't go over the existing ground stud and was wondering if there is a better place to mount it, maybe on the cowl area. They sent me an L-shaped bracket and some extra mounting hardware, but no suggestions as to where to mount them. Anybody else having the same problem.

there's already been many threads about this, and that same problem has been brought up before.... i ran a forum search and came up with these, see if they help.

cheers!

I have an '03 and had the same problem when trying to mount the can with existing frame ground stud. I didn't want to mount the can in the cowl as Alta suggested.

I took the supplied L-shaped bracket and cut off the short end. Then I bent a small part of the now straight bracket to the same angle of the engine side ground wire mounting "pad" while keeping the rest of the bracket level (parallel to the frame). Drilled a hole and now the can is suspended at the frame area (like the can in 02 cars) and clears the frame ground stud. Just remember to plug up that hole in the bottom of the can with the supplied plug.

Randy recently installed the Alta Oil Catch Can in my 04 MCS. I relocated it from the pass side cowl area to the usual location used on the 02/03 MCS. I fab'ed a bracket that used the motor mount (couple of S bends with a hammer and bench vise and it looks like it belongs there). I did this because I felt it was better for any oil to be blown down hill towards the Can rather than up hill as in the cowl installation.
After about 1500 miles there is NO OIL in the Catch Can, only some water from condensation.
Here is my question... Am I just lucky to have little or no blow-by or is the need for a Catch Can B-S?
BTW: My Mini has 5600 miles on it and I changed oil to Redline at 2200 miles.

I've resolved this issue. Look here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...c=24382&33

MSFITOY: Almost like yours except my bracket is flush with the top of the motor mount, then bends up 90 degrees for about 1/4" then right again until it clears the mount, the down 1/4" then right again to mount onto the top of the Alta can. Just took some hammering on a bench vise.
Have you seen any oil in you can?

That's what I'm going to do with the next bracket too but I'm working on the floor with a vise that I hold down with my foot LOL.

You know...I haven't seen any oil yet. I've seen oily water vapor occasionally but after a couple of hundred miles, still no oil accumulation in the can....hmmmmm

Although I haven't done it yet, probably should remove the intercooler to see if any oil is present in it or the rubber locators.
Has anyone with the Alta Catch Can rechecked their intercooler for oil reidue?

Just as an up-date, in 1500 miles have not seen any oil in the sight tube of the Alta Catch Can. There has been some brownish water from condensation, not much just a few drops, which I have drained once. I have been wondering if the catch can actually works. Just finished removing the intercooler and I'm happy  to say there was NO OIL in the intercooler or the rubber locators. Obviously, the Alta Can works I'm glad I got it as it has to allow the intercoller to be more efficient.

So, where is the oil going if not in the catch can?

You will see oil when you reach more miles. The oil is normally recycled into the intake system and reburned. Good for emission, bad for combustion (relatively). The worst part is the oil vapor is condensed inside your intercooler due to the temp difference and ends up coating the inside core reducing it's efficiency overall.

I have 20k+ miles now and have observed a small amount of oil in the intercooler boots. What I am asking is if apexer installed the catchcan, hasn't found any oil in it, but hasn't found oil in his intercooler, then where did that oil go? Does the catchcan contain a wormhole to an alternate dimension?

With just 6K miles guess my engine is tight enough that I don't get much blow-by. Thats the good part. If you take off the intercooler and shoot some brake clean through it you will see it clears out quite a bit of oily film. I had the same thing when I installed the Alta Can. As I'm sure you have seen posted here and elsewhere, many who have the catch can do get enough oil to require emptying it every couple months.
No brainer.. no oil coating the inside of the intercooler allows it to cool more efficiently.
