Post-Mod Pinging...

So, I *think* I already know the answer here, but wanna run it by you folks to make sure I'm on the right track. And I did search, but didn't see anything specific to this issue.

I installed the 17% pulley, no pinging. I installed a mini-madness header with custom metal-substrate hi-flow cat, I get check engine light from the increase in exhaust flow. I installed a rear o2 spacer to remove the sensor from the higher exhaust flow, cel goes away. But now the system thinks I'm running too rich, and is leaning out my a/f mixture and I'm pinging at WOT with my current mods (CAI is on the way as well).

So...aside from a tune which is a bit out of reach for me right now, would installing higher flow rate injectors help to alleviate the issue, delivering more fuel to even out the a/f mixture? I also have a set of Bosch 440's on their way to me, and was going to hold off installing until I could save for a tune, but thinking I may want to install them sooner than later.

Thoughts? Input? All appreciated.

Thanks

Jason and Coop'

You can do what you want, but I had the same mods and a BVH and with out a tune. I lost my motor. Running to lean and I had larger Injector. That not the answer. If you can't get a tune then stop adding mods and save your money before you blow your engine. By the way it cost me ( parts & labor ) about 8k when I was done.

First, what's a BVH? It only pings at WOT, so I know to keep it under that to keep the pinging from happening.

And note made, next step, custom tune.

Looking at your sig and your post. Are you running an RMW cam, header, free flow cat, original injectors and no DME Tweaking whatsoever ?

Bet the highflow exhaust, etc finely tipped it too too lean WOT.
THE 440 will need a tune or the car will run **** poor...
The small amount od added fuel from the JCW 380's might be just enough to alievate the pinging wot, while keeping it lean enough to run ok at lower rpms....
Taking the o2 sensor out of the mix ONLY effects non-WOT running....
When wot, the computer uses maps that are stored in memory...a slightly higher flow injector will trick the computer to adding a bit of fuel...not having the o2 sensor when cruising means the computer will not be able to adjust the fuel trim fror cruising/light throttle...so if you add too much fuel, no tune...it will run like crap.

Gray Raven....yeah, no tune. Was told I would be fine without one up to a certain point.

But I think Zippy has it right, that the header was the last straw.

Until I can afford a tune, I'm gonna just go easy on it, no WOT blasts.

Sheesh, be careful. There is not a day that goes by I don't get at or near WOT.

Basiclly you are correct, and yes as long as you drive normally the ecu will target a safe running condition. And yes the 380's will help but I don't think it will be enough to "fix" the problem without a tune, not to mention a waste of money since you want to go larger anyway (too bad you couldn't borrow some)

My car is not a DD, I take the bus to work, so it's usually just short stints around town, errands, and my weekend driver. That said, I'll still be careful until I can get a tune. I have 440's on the way, so I'm ready to get a tune, and I'll check out the Mynes Bytetronic putttn, thanks!

jimz68, BVH is a ways off still, but maybe someday....someday =)

there are also companies that can give you a remote tune... If you are pingin then that mean your have detination, what detination means is your engine is exploding before the spark is applied. This translates to your engines combustion chamber having a fierce explosion usually before the valves are completely closed, thus leading to a valve bend. Once a valve bends it dosent sit properly and can lead to it hitting the pistons. Once it starts hitting the piston it can break off and end in a extremely bad day. If it is pinging at high rpm just keep that ***** low if you HAVE to drive it. I would also suggest a step colder plug. I will always stand by a set of NGK BKR7E spark plugs gapped at .028-.032. The step plugs are needed for higher boost applications. If you run the BKR7E it would be a good idea to change them out every 5-10k miles since they are copper. Ohh they are also only a buck or two for each plug as compaired to the expensive ones at 15-20. To me its a better deal. Get your tune done ASAP!

I know Jan will do a remote tune, and that's what I'm hoping for if I can't do a group tune with my local club. He's mainly my driver around town, to the gym, store, etc. I will most definitely be keeping him under 4K and out of WOT until I can get a tune, I don't want to damage the engine which otherwise runs just fine.
