Drivetrain Question, turbo heat shield
Question, turbo heat shield
I was looking into getting the m7 turbo heat shield and was curious if anyone knew if it was a plus or a minus on helping. I just wasn't sure if it was safe or not. It looks like it would obviously keep some of the heat away from the intake. But at the same time a turbo is precious and don't want to encase it with heat.
Thanks
Thanks
I do not have the M7 one but I just got the NM one and its hard to say but Ive notice that theres not a large amount of heat shooting up at you when you pop the bonnet after driving, and at the same time im not gunna touch the shield to see if its absorbing heat lmaoo but I think its doing its job and make the engine look overall neater cause the stock one is really ugly ... Hope this helps out a bit but i know someone will chime in with an M7 one and give you some advice
I have an NM heatshield and like it, although the bonnet still is warm to the touch after sitting a few minutes, I imagine the M7 may be the same although it has extra heat absorbing material. I think they all help no matter which one you choose.
On another note, I think Way Motor Works offers a blanket that covers the exhaust side of the turbo for a little less than the M7 shield, (not avail when I purchased my shield). The idea is, you want to keep the heat in the exhaust side, (they can get RED HOT). Gad, I think I'm talking myself into getting one to go along with my shield as well. Anyway, good luck.

I think this is standard equipment on the new MCS. Cheaper than all the heat shield out there!

Why not just use the factory updated parts?
1. The small aluminum heat shield sold either by Way Motor Works or via the dealer. Helps protect hood scoop and to some extent seems to redirect some scoop air rearward. Cost is <$30.
2. The small clip-on oil line metal heat shield. Fitted to newer ones at the oil line bolt up point--covered in a prior Mini technical bulletin. Costs < #1 and should help avoid coking of the critical oil/ oil cooling line to the turbo bearing.
Neither would raise warranty issues like something encasing the turbo from above could in theory.
Search archives for part #'s or see if someone else posts; I don't have them handy.

I have the M7 aerogel turbo heat shield installed on my JCW and I love it. It's good value for your money... and it covers up that horrible mess of a "shield" (I use sarcastic quote marks) that comes with the car.
Best of luck!

I've got the NM shield, and I guess it does the trick...although it's hard to tell unless I took temperature readings. I think the main purpose of the design of the NM shield is that it serves as a secondary piece of metal fairly close to the turbo and stock heat shield which acts like a heatsink to dissipate the heat from the turbo. The M7 aerogel seems to work to absorb the heat.

Nether did mine.
I'm on the hunt to resolve this issue as well. Currently I'm leaning on just slapping some reflective tape on the underside of the hood.

My 11 MCS doesn't have anything like the ECS part either. I am considering adding one. The top of my hood (bonnet for those insisting on British terms when referring to a quasi British car) gets pretty hot so a heat shield just might be the ticket.
NM just released their titanium heat shield for the 2011. It fits like a dream and definitely keeps the scoop from really hot. Last week I drove 3 1/2 hours to see Way in Atlanta (80 mph+) and immediately after parking I could rest my hand on the scoop!
Can you post pics? I can't find pictures of the updated shield
The 2011 version is just ever so slightly different. On the back side it is curves down less, and you'll see it doesn't have the cutout on the drivers side the the pre 2011 does. The studs that mount it are also different.

Didn't notice the hot side turbo heat shield/wrap you used to offer. Any reason why?

Found this on a site..it would be about 200.00 but would actually USE the scoop to push air to the turbo. I would trust this before covering my Turbo.
