Drivetrain Torsen LSD - Chime in.

Torsen LSD - Chime in.
Doing a clutch next month using the Valeo kit from Way. No huge dollars for a higher end one and lets face it I only have 210hp anyways.
Anyways I have seen back and forth about the Ford Torsen LSD but no new updates from those who installed one. For those of you that did how do you like the unit? How does it help in both strait line ans cornering?

I chose it over the OBX. $660 or so with bearings from Tousley Ford in MN.
I chose it over the $400 OBX for peace of mind.
It hooks up very well when you get on it out of a turn. It pulls the wheel around so you have to grip the steering wheel tightly. I have 265 hp. and it hits pretty hard.
I don't have experience with other LSD's so I cannot compare it to anything else. Except stock open dif, which obviously could not get traction coming out of a turn.
It was put in with Competition Clutch and flywheel (stage 4), purchased thru RMW (Jan). His mechanic put it in along with rebuilt 1.6

I've had experience with Torsens back in my FSAE years. They are pretty solid and held up to some abuse. Probably not a deal breaker but the if you have no traction with one wheel, they will act as an open diff. It will need some resistance on the loose wheel before it acts as a limited slip. So don't expect to go anywhere fast if you drop the clutch with one wheel on ice. Other than that, a good geared unit.

Add to the list another FSAEer with some torsen experience. We had one in our first car and it was a solid unit.
I find it acting as an open diff a bit more that I would like, but I think I have spent more time using it in the cold and with snow tires than on my sticky summer tires, so my opinion may change there. You would have the same issue with a quaife though...
I have one in my car now, you will gain a lot of toque steer, but then you will also actually be able to put the power down... Choose wisely.
It does groan a little bit but that has cleared up over time.
EDIT:
For those who may read this later. The torsen and quaife are of a different design. Maybe they are the same for the SVT focuse but for the MINI they same to be different. If you go the torsen website you'll note that the the plane jane T2 has no preload. This means that it doesnt work as well in really low traction. The quaife appears to be of the same design as the T2R, which torsen advertises as working in one wheel in the air type situations.

Following this thread as well. Like you, I've already decided on the Valeo kit mostly because of it's civility. But while on the job, I'm thinking the Torsen might be a good upgrade because of the value. Quaife would be my second choice. Not much feedback from Torsen users here on NAM for now...

Went ahead and placed the order for the M-4204-SVTF torsen unit. Found it at a good price even though it (apparently) went up in price very recently. Can't wait. [seems like the Quaife can be had for a pretty steep discount as well, after some research].
If the Torsen folks have any recommendations for the install (extra parts needed/modifications), I'd love to hear about it.

The Quaife can bias more torque basically. The Quaife hs springs in it that preload the diff so that if one of the wheels starts to go light and really lose grip it still transmits torque to the wheel with grip. With the Torsen I often find the diff acting like the open unit I replace when it is wet out or things get really out of hand.

Quick research shows there is zero difference between the two: (not in terms of construction, but in performance)

And even the people who have gotten the Quaife still suggest getting the Torsen stating there is no real difference in power.

Ok, I read the same thing when I was researching it. Whatever the case may be my torsen didnt have preload washers in it, and looking at the T2 on the Torsen website would verify this. The one I have is not a T2r. Whatever the case may be there is always the possibility I am wrong.
