Drivetrain Best way to replace input shaft seal?
Best way to replace input shaft seal?
Started doing my clutch, and was going to do a few other things while I had the front end apart. This quickly turned into the job from hell where it seems like I'm replacing everything except the motor/supercharger itself. Anyways, when I finally got the transmission off I see this

I'm assuming the leak is coming from the input shaft seal, the little bit of pooled oil I found was not engine oil. Also the rear main seal looked ok to me, what do you guys think?

So far the only way I've seen is k-huevo's where he rips out the seal with angled needle nose pliers, and hammers it back in with pvc.
I've never replaced a seal like this before and am just a little worried about the bearing itself behind it. If I go with the needle nose pliers approach how careful do I have to be, I don't see it being very easy to get out.

When you get the new seal, you will see there isn't much to them. They really don't have much force to work against. Once you have the new one, you can see how to best approach the extraction. A hook wiggled through the rubber will get it started (and you committed) then you have to yank. A needle nose and PVC seems about right to me though. It isn't hard to get out, just hard to get a grip on it to tug hard enough.
