isnt there a way to just send out the ecu and just have the ecu flash it instead of paying for the module? id imagine that would be alot cheaper no?

The old "pay to play" problem...
All bolts on most folks have put on a mini up to this point are a few $$ here, a few $$ here, so the $$$ for a tune seems high...
But as a per hp cost compared to what you can get for an exaust, it is a pretty good deal. Not sure the typical gains on a non-custom tune, but much of the gains IMO are pure driveability (on a dyno tune). It just makes everything work as one again...kinds like factory again...Just it takes advantage of your new parts to get you more power!!

Just make sure to have a pulley, injectors, and maybe an aftermarket intake before you get the software. I thought I read somewhere awhile back that some dealers will install the software for a relatively inexpensive price. I know for a fact you dont have to have the JCW powerkit to get the software.
The writing seems to be on the wall regarding tunes, but will be disregarded anyway. I am on second MINI and have threw money away on mods/tuning etc. I guess if someone really wants a GIAC tune or whatever there is no way to advise better.

Yes for the R53 we can bench tune, but obviously you can't drive your car while we have your ECU. Then you would save the price of the remote module.

Can't be done without having first registered the stage 1 JCW kit with your VIN. ($4,500.00 kit)

The software is VIN coded and tech's cannot load it into just anyones DME.

If they told you they did, then you should go and get your money back......
