P0171 (Lean) and 20 mpg?

Well I have a dilemma now on my hands. I am getting 20mpg and the p0171 code comes up intermittently... What are your guys experience on this?

Mods are Alta CAI, 15%, DT BPV, VGS, IK22 Plugs

and the tail pipes are clean!

Look around for a vacume leak....(I haven't looked up the code though).
Poor mpg/lean codes usually go hand in hand...
And the clean tailpipe let's you know it is likely a real issue...mini's usually run rich.

Make sure the VGS isn't leaking, or put it back to stock.

what temps are you driving in? the colder it gets, the leaner youll run. also make sure your running quality fuel. check to make sure your fuel rail is getting full pressure (51psi), im sure theres a how to posted somewhere

Well Im here in the Chula Vista area of San Diego. Im not so sure it is a fuel delivery problem as the gas mileage is horrible well 20 mpg. If it was truly just running lean and the mileage was in the 30s then i would say for sure its a delivery problem. does that make sense? Thank you for the suggestions!!!

The color of the tail pipes let's you know it is lean...matches up well with the codes...
Remember, a mini will make a bit of black soot on the pipes...
None is what most cars make...(mini's run rich from the factory)
White/gray is very lean...
Unmetered air will drop mpg..a vac leak...or an intake, etc, due to loss of efficiency.
There are a few ways to check for leaks...listen for hissing, using an unlit propane tourch...(carefully) and letting the gas get sucked in will cause an rpm change....

Well, I just un did the vgs mod and the car still runs the same I did find that that one of the IC boots was slightly pinched, I fixed that and wiped everything down really good, went to the gas station filled it up and reset the computer. I will wait to see what kind of mileage I get. I did check for vacuum leaks with some brake cleaner but came up empty.

i wish my tailpipes were clean, they're always aweful. anyway, check to make sure your fuel pressure is at 51 PSI, if you pull the intercooler the rail is right there with threads to attach something like this: fuel pressure tester
if it isnt an intake or vaccuum leak, that would be my next best guess

I have a tester but the rail is too close to the air horn. I need to get a 90* adapter of some sort in order to make it work. I am wondering if the transfer hose from the fuel pump to the basin fell off I highly doubt it but my next task is to check for that. I want to run some miles on it and see where the fuel milage goes to see if i found it. The next step if not is going to be an appointment and a local shop with a smoke machine to help find the Vacuum leak.

I wonder if there is a FPG that will attach to the end of the rail that I can leave permanently in the car.
