Drivetrain 17% pulley
17% pulley
Alright so i just bought a alta v2 17% pulley. i have the motor up everything is ready for the pulley to just come off. well i cant get it off but i was trying to use a gear puller. i know its different its all i had and it wont budge. So if there is anyone close to South Jordan Utah that has a pulley puller and is willing to let me borrow it that would be awesome. I need it by monday 8/30/2010. Thanks guys if you have a puller that i could come get just shoot me a text at 801-634-7255.
Thanks Ryan.
Thanks Ryan.
Alright if i bent it how would i go about cutting it off with out damaging the rod that goes to the sc? I bought it off a guy who was selling it on the market. Thr-apy was the guys name you could ask him where he bought it from. But last i heard Alta doesn't make the 17% anymore. Could have just been a rumor though.
Also im removing a jcw pulley. i dont know if this makes a difference or not to be honest i think i just just took on way to much for what i can handle but theres really no turning back now.
Actually it does. The JCW is a smaller pulley and I don't know of a puller on the market that will fit it. So, you will likely have to cut it off. You have to be careful not to damage the shaft. The one that I had to cut I did in quarters and it popped apart.
Like said the JCW puller is different....a bit more rare....
The pullers for the SC pullies are a perfect negative of the pulley you are pulling off....they do-not have arms like a standard puller....it is just on too tight. Like said...if you damaged it, it will need to be carefully cut off. Many vendors stock a standard puller, and a JCW...you need to ask for the right one...many only list the regular.
Alta did stop selling the 17% for a bit, but many places still sell them. Lately Alta has been paring down the # of r-53 parts by tons with sales....so no big deal...many other companies are still selling plenty of parts!!

PS, be sure to use some lock-tite and use a torque wrench when you re-install the new pulley....aftermarket pulleys are re-usable when removed correctly....heck if it is new, maybe he bought a stack when Alta was selling them at 50% a few months ago!!
Alright thanks guys. If you know of a video of someone cutting off the pulley i would love to have the link. But it looks like Iam defiantly cutting this off. But i will let you know how it goes. Thanks again
Alright i got the pulley off. I cut it then used some gear pullers came right off. I put the new pulley and belt on and everything back together start it up. The tensor is like bumping back in forth. Have any ideas i dont really no how to explain it.
The tensioner I took off worked, but it was really dead and just didn't know it. The damper was shot, loose and useless. It was remarkable. If you or anyone ever has the belt off, make sure there is at least a little resistance from the damper.
BTW, what belt did you put on, you probably need a smaller one. napa 4060535 or a replacement will be the right length. Stock may just be too long the the tensioner travel is not long enough to tighten it.

I think it may just be that belt. I am believe a lower number is shorter so yours may be too long. The new wheel is smaller and a smaller belt than stock is needed. The one I mentioned is recommended for a 15% pulley, so there may even be a better one for you. Search 17% and belt and maybe you will get lucky using search or wait until someone can clarify. Anyway, if that is a stock size, it is probably your problem.
Every time i do a search for the belt it keeps coming up with that same belt number. But i will keep looking and i guess i will just have to look at it all again thanks for your help
I am google king.

Looks like you used the recommended belt. If you have it routed properly (don't forget the dipsy do on the right side) then it very well could be the tensioner.
EDIT: I just looked at the belt chart again, and the only time they recommend the belt I mentioned is at 19% pulley, but I can assure you it works for a 15% so it might be better. I hate to have you replace the tensioner if it is only the belt size.

It has been stated many times that the ALTA chart is wrong....I have even posted it a time or two...it is easy to find, and convenient. Most folks use the 535 length belt with a 17 and it works fine, a newer 539 belt should be fine when new....but when it gets older, it may slip...new, it should work fine. If the tennsioner is bouncing around, check alignment, and I'd replace the tensioner...heck, many folks do them pre-preemptively at 75,000 miles or so.
If these guys say the belt should be fine if new, I believe them. As far as the tensioner goes, mine had no symptoms but was totally shot.

The damper would move if you just tilted it like a curtain rod, it was totally non-functioning as a damper. It sounds like the next step.

So i think i figured it out the pulley was not lined up with the rest of the crank wheels almost like it wasn't on all the way. Well its slid up as tight as i can get it on the shaft. But it still isn't lined up. But i have a Alta v2 17 pulley and the collar is sticking out a 1/4 of an inch almost like the pulley is not on all the way. Now i dont know if thats just how the pulley sits but from the pictures i have seen it looks like there is something wrong with mine. sorry if this doesn't make any sense. i cant really think of a way to explain it and i don't have any pictures or videos of it.
So i guess this is the real question is there suppose to be a 1/4 inch of the sleeve showing after i put the pulley on over it or is it all suppose to be covered? Alta V2 17% Pulley Sorry should have pictures tomorrow. "Didn't have time today"
Yea, pics would be better. Did you slide the coupler all the way down on the shaft of the SC? It should be butted against the nose cone. One of the screws is a pain to get to as it is generally covered a little by the lip of the SC. After that you simply mount the pulley part.
