OCC advice

I recently bought an Oil Catch Can for my 03 MCS from a NAM member.

Now I am beginning to read that they may not be all that good for the R53. What is the consensus here? Is it harmful for S/C Minis, or does it not really have any effect?

Thanks!

Harmful? If you maintain it, no.

Helpful? Slightly.

I don't have one on my original 02 MCS and don't plan to install one either. I would change my mind if I were racing the car, but I'm not. Like Agarwaen said, if you do install it make sure you empty it.

Where are you reading that it is harmful? I would like to see that.

OCC are useful depending on the amount of oil they can catch. Easiest way to verify what amount of oil would be caught is to remove the IC and visually check for the oil. The more you have, the better it will work and the better your engine will like it.

You just want to make sure it is ONLY connected to the PCV line that goes to the SC.

I was using the search function on the forums and read that one guy said the mini engineers didn't recommend an OCC since the oil put out through the PCV was used to lubricate some part of the supercharger or the supercharger line or something like that. I will see if I can find the post again.

I could believe that, I have read that post I think. The only thing that would be bearings, but I would bet those are sealed. The nose gears have their own lube reservoir, as does the water pump drive. It just deosnt strike me as an effective lubrication method however, too inconsistent.

Sounds iffy, as Someguy says, most to all of the things in that intake line have their own lubrication source.

the only real harm i can see with an OCC is letting it fill up/freeze up. In which case pressure could buildup in the crankcase and gaskets could blow out, among other things.
