Replacing stock crank pulley

Hey all,

My 03 MCS is nearing 110K on the clock, and I want to replace the stock crank pulley before it explodes and leaves me stranded somewhere.

I found two choices.

http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...nk_pulley.html

http://waymotorworks.com/super-dampe...ulley-r53.html

What is the functional difference between these two products. Why is one so much more expensive than the other?

Thanks!

One has a damper function that reduces any stress on the engine. There are plenty of threads about if this is needed or not, but the original has a damper (which is why you need a new one, the rubber is shot) ATI is a big name in racing and will do what you need. There are plenty of folks who say you don't need that function and they have many miles on the cars to back up their theory.

I bought the ATI since I whip the snot out of my mini, but that's just me.

Get the ATI....they are cheaper+better than OEM. You can get the factory sized or over-sized....
IMO it is not worth taking a chance with an undampened pulley...you might be OK for a year or two, but if you have an oil leak, or bearing failure, you will be wondering IF the damper is the reason......Stick with OEM performance or better items...DON'T downgrade!!
An engineer had a harmonic damper installed for a reason....Stick with it....There are tons of debate on the subject, but Jan at RMW did state he has pictures of failed lightweight pulleys....he said he has seen a few on cars too...Physically failed that is....the pulley can collapse, and sheer off the center...I've seen one too. If it does/does not make a difference in long-term engine life? Not sure if it was tested by anybody but BMW/MINI.
But IMO why chance it.

This was also my conclusion. I will be getting the ATI in the near future.

Thanks all.

I bought the ATI, they have a bullet-proof reputation.
